CRAG Bat Walk – Thank You, Coaley

What a fantastic evening on the Rec last night. 35 villagers joined our bat walk and the feedback has been very positive.

Andrew Heryet from the Gloucestershire Bat Group gave a brilliant introduction to the local bat species, how to use the bat detectors, and how different frequencies help us identify their calls.

It turned into a beautiful warm evening — the rain held off, and we even had an electric storm flickering in the distance. It was amazing to hear and see so many bats flying around the hedge row along Nortons Alley and around the Churchyard.

We’re hugely grateful for the generous donations made on the night, which will support the ongoing work of Gloucestershire Bats Group to protect habitats, monitor roosts, and educate communities.

Thank you to everyone who came along, helped steward the walk, and contributed to a memorable community evening. Thank you to the bell ringers of St Bartholomew’s Church who finished their practise early especially for the bats. .

The event was arranged as part of the CRAG programme to deepen local understanding of nature and the environment. The next Nature Morning is 10 October 10am in the Village Hall.

* AMENDED START TIME*

The Gloucestershire Bat Group has asked us to bring the start time of the Coaley Bat Walk forward.
Sunset on Wednesday 26 August is earlier than expected (around 8.12pm), so to make sure everyone gets the full briefing before the bats begin to emerge, we will now meet at 8.00pm.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank everyone for their understanding.
We’re looking forward to a great evening on the rec.

Coaley Rec – Thank You Volunteers

A huge thank‑you to everyone who came out this morning to clean up the rec!
We achieved a fantastic amount and had a good laugh together too — sweeping the old park, tidying the bottom car park, weeding and cutting back the sensory garden, clearing the entrances and paths, cleaning the bus shelter and fixing the Nortons Alley gate too.

It was wonderful to see so many people come to help — it made light work of everything, kept the morning cheerful, and the shop coffee was both delicious and very welcome.

The rec looks fantastic thanks to you all.
Thank you for giving your time to keep Coaley looking great — your efforts truly make a difference.

Coaley Recreation Ground – Quick Tidy‑Up Today

The weather has finally cooled, and it’s a perfect chance to get a few small jobs done on the rec. If you’re around, we’ll be doing some light weeding and sweeping up to keep things looking welcoming.

Please bring a broom if you have one — even 20 minutes of help makes a real difference.

Meet at the shop!

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the rec and keep it looking great.

Coaley Recreation Ground – Morning Clean‑Up Update

The weather is expected to be hot, but we’ll go ahead with our morning clean‑up on Saturday 15th August. We’ll be gently pulling weeds and giving the entrances a good sweep so everything is welcoming for visitors.

Time: Start at 10 AM, finishing before midday.
What to bring: Gloves, plenty of water, and sun block.

Let us know if you can make it for the drinks order.

Thank you to everyone who’s giving their time to help keep the rec looking great — your efforts really do make a difference.

Hedgehogs on the Rec

Happy days — we’ve spotted at least two young hedgehogs roaming the Rec at night. They’ve been grazing on the short grass and look healthy, disappearing back into cover by morning.

The small changes we have been making on the rec has been making it more habitable helping wildlife feel at home.

A special thanks to the CRAG nature team who has been delivering the monthly sessions at the village hall designed to help wildlife in Coaley.
