Isle of Wight Stand Up To Racism: First General Meeting

For Isle of Wight SUTR and Supporters!

We're a local branch of Stand Up To Racism, campaigning against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and fascism.

We're currently looking for volunteers for the following roles:

• Co-chair

• Treasurer

• Secretary

If you are a member/planning to become a member of Stand Up To Racism and are interested in one of the above roles please reach out to put yourself forward.

We are also hoping to organise a Unity Rally here on the Isle of Wight as a celebration of togetherness and solidarity. We'll be discussing plans at the meeting.

On 2nd August, Far right groups from Portsmouth plan to hold a protest in Gosport. While they claim this will be a "peaceful protest," previous events have involved hate speech against minority groups, targeted harassment, and violent rhetoric which included several arrests afterwards. These group do not represent our community, and their presence threatens the safety and well-being of local residents.
We are a network of Gosport residents dedicated to keeping our town safe, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone—regardless of race, religion, culture, or gender. We reject the hatred, division, and intimidation tactics used by extreme groups.
Please join us on 2nd August to stand together in unity against hate and show that everyone is welcome in Gosport. Protecting our neighbours from bigotry and discrimination isn't a political issue; it's a community responsibility. We need your help—join us!"

Unity in the Community - Refugee Celebration March
July 2026 marks 75 years since the United Nations Refugee Convention was signed in 1951, defining what it means to be a refugee and how countries like the UK should offer sanctuary to those fleeing fear, conflict or persecution.

However Southampton has been a city that offers sanctuary for hundreds of years, a port city that has welcomed people here be that temporarily or permanently when they have needed a safe place to go. From the Huguenots to the Basque children to those in Southampton today from places such as Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Ukraine, we have a proud tradition of welcome in this city.

Join us on Sunday 12th July to celebrate the courage and resilience of refugees in Southampton, past, present and as we look to the future.

We will meet next to the fountain outside Southampton Central Library (Commercial Road) at 12pm for some short speeches, before setting off at 12:30pm to walk through the town and culminating in Mayflower Park. We would welcome people to bring banners or placards to demonstrate that refugees are welcome and musical items. This march is a celebration!

We recognise that over the last twelve months, those seeking sanctuary in Southampton have been subject to hate and protest but we are coming together to say that Refugees are Welcome here, that Southampton is a City of Sanctuary and that we are proud to be a city that has always welcomed those in need.

We look forward to seeing you on 12th July.

Stand Up To Racism Isle of Wight condemns the recent far-right demonstrations on the island exploiting the death of Henry Nowak to push a harmful political narrative.

The police should absolutely be held accountable for their mistreatment of Henry Nowak in his final moments and the negligence which likely contributed to his death.

Police misconduct is a major systemic issue that can affect anyone, but disproportionately affects ethnic minorities.

The narrative that Henry Nowak was a victim of 'anti-white racism' and 'two tier policing' is blatant misinformation being pushed for a racist agenda.

It is deeply disgusting and disrespectful how this young man's tragic death is being weaponised for this far right political agenda, against the wishes of his grieving family, distracting from the real issues of police misconduct, along with fueling hate and division.

Henry Nowak and his family deserve better.

Southampton, let’s come together! Saturday 20th of June - Assemble at 12:00pm outside Waitrose SO17 2FX.
We must stand strong and united to block hate, violence, and intimidation from spreading across our community. Neighbours and local businesses deserve to feel safe, not threatened or silenced. Together, we can ensure that racism and the exploitation of real tragedies for selfish agendas have no place here.
By blocking off Portswood, we send a clear message: We stand against division, and we stand for compassion, dignity, and unity. Call your friends. Tell your families. Rally your neighbours.
This is our moment to stand shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand. If we are to protect our community, defend our values, and reject hate, we must show up together.
