We are heartbroken by the loss of Professor Jason Arday.
His untimely death following weeks of relentless public scrutiny, is a tragedy. We believe Jason was held to a standard, and pursued with an intensity, that others in his position simply would not have faced - and that his story became a vehicle for a wider campaign against equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education. That should trouble all of us who care about who gets to belong in these institutions, and on what terms.
At With Insight Education, we work every day with Black-heritage students who are navigating spaces that were not built with them in mind, students who carry both extraordinary promise and the weight of having to prove, again and again, that they belong.
Professor Arday's death is a huge loss to our community. But it also steadies our resolve. We will keep working — with universities, with corporate partners, with local authorities — to build spaces in higher education where Black students' lived experience and achievements are not treated as liabilities to be scrutinised, but as the foundation of the scholarship, leadership and insight they will bring as the professors, researchers and leaders of tomorrow.
If any of you have been affected by this news, here are a few things that might help, if you need them:
1. Talk to someone
2. Put what you're feeling into words, in your own way
3. Step back from the news cycle if it's too much
4. Connect with others who get it
5. Move your body, rest, eat, do the basic things
Rest in peace, Professor Arday.
