As part of the National Year of Reading, we’re celebrating stories like My Dad — our current Book of the Month. It's a lovely way to encourage children to talk about the people who are special to them and crafts like this are a great way to bring those conversations to life!

Dads and male carers, come along with your children for a relaxed, fun session at the Beacon of Light – just in time for Father’s Day weekend.

Please stay safe in and around water this summer🙏

We’re supporting the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week (running until 20 June), helping to raise awareness of water safety and reduce the risk of accidental drowning.

If you’re going to the beach, always choose one that is lifeguarded, and if you decide to swim, stay between the red and yellow flags - it’s the safest place to be.

In Sunderland, there are RNLI lifeguards on duty daily at Roker, Seaburn and Cat and Dog beaches, 10am-6pm until 6 September🏖️

RLSS UK is also urging everyone to follow its Water Code:
✅ Stop and Think - look for dangers and read signs.
✅ Stay Together - always go with others and choose lifeguarded spots.
✅ Call 999 - in an emergency phone 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service when inland, and the coastguard if at the coast. Don't enter the water to rescue .
✅ Float - if you’re in trouble in the water, float on your back and call for help. Throw something that floats to someone who has fallen in.
