November is the month for our Annual General Meeting, where we will be electing our President, Secretary and Treasurer to serve on our Committee until November 2026.
We will also be holding our Annual Photo Competition which this year is "Wild Life". We had very good exhibits last year and are expecting the as good, if not better, this year. We will also be enjoying a fun night after all the business is completed, so a goodtime will be had by all.

Our October speaker, Sophie Lemon came from The Leprosy Mission and gave us a talk that was totally different. She started with a quiz about Leprosy and then went on to tell us that the Mission was set up in 1847 and how it has progressed over the years. She explained that Leprosy is not easy to catch and is totally curable but because of the social stigma associated with it many people will not seek help. The Mission will treat everyone who presents themselves for treatment and how £24.00 will cure a person of the dreaded disease. Not only does the Mission provide medication it also provides health care, physiotherapy, occupational training and specialised equipment and clothing.
Approximately 200,000 new cases of Leprosy are reported each year, worldwide, with India having the largest numbers. Women, in particular, are treated very badly by society and Sophie showed us a film about one of the patients who the Mission had helped. It told how her family disowned her and that she was abandoned by society. Help arrived and she was treated with antibiotics, her home refurbished and although very disabled she was assisted to live an independent life.
It is unbelievable that the price of a couple of slices of cake and a pot of tea can cure such a dreadful and life altering disease.

September meeting..

Due to unforeseen circumstances our speaker could not come to give us our arranged talk so we had a fun night instead. We chatted drank tea and coffee and ate wonderful home made cakes. To get our old grey cells working we also had 2 quizzes. One a picture quiz about dogs and another about the WI and the British Isles. At the end of the evening we were all exhausted with having to think so much. Although the evening was arranged at the last minute everyone thoroughly enjoyed the easygoing friendly atmosphere.

Last month you were asked to see this month's magazine to see the many interests the Winstone and District WI have to offer.
We are a small WI in a small area but we take pride in the fact we are a very active group.
We have a Book Club, a Craft Club
We play skittles and go litter picking
Have coffee mornings and organise outings to various places of interest
We have a yearly Garden Party and a Christmas and/or New Year Dinner
We organise a Christmas Fair and Our Pudding Evening is truly gastronomic
And of course we have our photo competition.
As well as all the above we have our monthly meetings with talks, all accompanied by tea and fantastic home made cakes.
Best of all is the friendship and camaraderie within our small group.
Many people do not realise that these activities are happening in the Winstone area - did you?
Come and join us for an evening and see how we work. We welcome visitors - a small fee of £4.50 payable at the door. We also welcome new members and would be very pleased to see and meet you. If you are nervous about coming alone phone our Secretary Chris on 01285 821261 who can arrange for someone to greet you at the door or even to pick you up for the first visit.
