Australia is building large floating solar farms on dams to tackle two major challenges at once: water loss and clean energy production. According to PV Magazine Australia, these floating panels generate renewable electricity while shading the water surface, which helps reduce evaporation in the country’s hot, dry climate. The initiative is part of a five-year research project called NEESTI, aimed at helping farmers and utilities become more climate-resilient.

The Cotton Research and Development Corporation reports that nearly half of on-farm water storage is lost to evaporation each year. By placing solar panels on dams, Australia could save up to 296 gigalitres of water annually, according to CRDC estimates. That’s enough to fill more than 118,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Planet Ark adds that water utilities in Victoria are also adopting this technology, with floating systems that reduce evaporation by up to 55 percent while generating clean power.

Unlike full-cover systems that risk water quality issues, these solar arrays allow light and oxygen to reach the water, keeping it safe for use. Supported by federal funding and research from Macquarie University and the University of Southern Queensland, the project shows how smart design can protect vital resources and support sustainable energy at the same time.
