Following President Trump’s recent comments on NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Royal British Legion has issued the following statement across all our media channels.

Director General, Mark Atkinson, said:

‘The service and sacrifice of British personnel in Afghanistan cannot be called into question, and we condemn any comments that undermine their extraordinary contribution. 457 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan and thousands more and their families now live with the lifelong physical and mental impact from service in that conflict.

‘The dedication and sacrifices of the men and women in the British Armed Forces from the UK, Commonwealth, and beyond, to protect our freedoms and support our allies deserves our deep and ongoing respect and gratitude.

‘Our nation’s support for our Armed Forces is never in doubt. The Royal British Legion through our ongoing work to recognise, remember, and support the Armed Forces community, ensures that their unique contribution is not forgotten. This recognition is shared across communities, cultures, and faiths.’

On behalf of the Chairman, Committee and Comrades of Poyntzpass Royal British Legion, may we wish every one of our supporters a Peaceful and Prosperous New Year.

At this time of year we remember the members of our Armed Forces who continue to work for the safety of our Nation and the commonwealth. We raise a glass and remember all our Absent Friends who gave their lives that we might have ours, and those who served and lived their lives with the trauma of war and conflict.

In this the 80th anniversary year of the end of the Second World War, where we seen victory in Europe and Japan, we pause to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and those who have been left to mourn and suffer, many in silence.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

The Poppy Shop in the Memorial Hall finishes this Saturday from 10am to 2pm, come and get your last minute Poppy supplies.

If you have time, we look forward to meeting you for a cuppa and chat as we remember the sacrifice of past generations which has secured the freedoms we enjoy today.

Lest We Forget

The Branch Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade is to Acton Parish Church this year, meet in the hall to form up 6.45 and Service at 7pm. Once again we will be led by our friends in Poyntzpass Silver Band.

The Service will be conducted my Dean Gregory Dunstan and assisted my Rev Mark Wilson from the Presbyterian Church.

There will be a light supper in the hall after the return parade giving everyone the opportunity to chat and enjoy the comradeship with guests from other Branches as well as the Youth organisations, neighbours and friends.

Do call in for all your Poppy supplies and have a look at the lovely jewellery and attractive raffle prizes available too.

The Poppy Shop will be in the Memorial Hall this Saturday 25 October from 10am to 12 Noon.

It is also be open on Saturday 1 November and Saturday 8 November from 10am to 2pm.

Please come along and encourage friends and neighbours to drop in too for all their Poppy supplies as well as a cuppa and chat with the helpers and local supporters.

Aswell as the normal Poppy selection, this year we have a lovely range of Poppy jewellery on offer at very reasonable prices as well as a our usual raffle for some attractive prizes. All proceeds from both go to the Poppy Appeal.
