Chilterns Dog Rescue Society

Chilterns Dog Rescue Society We are a rescue and re-homing centre for unwanted dogs and dogs in need. In addition we also offer limited dog boarding. Our Boarding Licence No.

We are fully licensed and authorised by Buckinghamshire Council. is LC201711-1057. Chilterns Dog Rescue Society was founded in 1963 by Mrs Dolly Bromley so our history now stretches over 50 years. Dolly found a small dog tied up and abandoned in Amersham. After trying to locate its owner, she took it to the local police station where she was horrified to learn that if the dog was not claimed, it w

ould be put down at the end of the week. Dolly refused to accept that and, being unable to keep a dog herself, she telephoned friends and acquaintances and found it a new and loving home. Those who became involved with this one little dog soon became aware of the need to help other dogs in distress. This was the start of the Society which, until 1985, was known as the Amersham and Chesham and District Dog Rescue and Welfare Society. Soon, all lost and unwanted dogs in the area were being referred to the Dog Rescue for rehoming. Since 1963, over 18,000 dogs have been homed. Not only does the Society care for and find homes for lost and abandoned dogs, owners circumstances sometimes change and this can result in dogs coming into our care. Whatever the reason, these dogs are cared for by the Society until the right new home can be found for them. Our priority is the dogs and we will always put the dogs first. In the beginning, the Society paid for dogs to go to various boarding kennels in the Chilterns area. This was a temporary measure and not very satisfactory as it made it extremely difficult for prospective owners to view the dogs in order to make a choice. Eventually an arrangement was made with a single boarding kennel in the area where the Society could keep all its dogs in one place and provide access to the public. This was not a perfect solution, but a step in the right direction. We always hoped we would find the right place to expand and involve our members more fully in our work. For 20 years we were based in Ashley Green, near Chesham, Bucks. In 2009, after years of hard work by many many supporters the Society finally achieved its dream of buying its own premises in Chivery, near Tring, Herts. This will enable us to construct purpose built facilities for the dogs that come into our care. In July 2013 planning permission was obtained to construct a new Rescue Centre to create a Centre of Excellence for rescue and rehoming. We refuse to have dogs put down except for extreme medical reasons or irreversible behavioural conditions. To this end, we provide extensive veterinary care and training for the dogs that need it. The Society has a long history of rescue and rehoming and continues to grow thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of its many supporters, volunteers, members and Trustees.

Spare a thought for Mark who is preparing to run 86 miles for us when he takes on the Ridgeway Challenge on Saturday. Although cooler at the weekend we are still going to be reaching temperatures of 25degrees and he expects it will take around 20 hours to complete! Please show your support for Mark by making a donation. All of the monies raised will go directly towards the dogs in our care. Good Luck Mark, stay cool. We think you are pawsome!

Good advice from our friends at Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre.
As a result of the predicted heatwave we have made the decision that there will be no volunteer dog walking; this will most likely be in place for the next week. Thank you for your understanding.

⚠️☀️The weather is going to become extremely hot, especially over the weekend & into next week⚠️☀️

✅We strongly recommend that you DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG OUTSIDE, AWAY FROM HOME during the daytime whilst the heat wave is upon us.

✅Taking your dog to a fete, or fun dog show is going to be extremely dangerous & we recommend giving them a miss.

✅Walk your dog at dawn, or dusk - but please do still take extreme care in the evenings as the air is still going to be very hot and humid.

✅If your dog is exhibiting signs of heat stroke please drench them all over in cool water ASAP and get them into the shade/indoors (ideally by a fan!) and then phone your vet for advice.

📋Recent published studies have shown that wetting an animal with water before transporting them to a vets resulted in better outcomes.

⭐️Remember ⭐️

👀Signs of heat stroke

🔹Panting
🔹Brick red gums
🔹Excessive salivation
🔹Restlessness
🔹Collapse
🔹Vomiting
🔹Muscle twitching & seizures

⚠️Things to avoid

❎Never cover your dog in wet towel as it will trap the heat
❎Don't let your dog play with the hose pipe or water sprinkling systems as they may ingest too much water - This can cause water toxicity.
❎If your dog is struggling to breathe do not attempt to put anything (liquid or otherwise) into their mouths. We have seen terrible advice circulating online which recommends using lemon juice to help break down saliva. This does not work and is also extremely unpleasant for the dog!

Our supporters never cease to amaze us! On the 30th May Mark Plumb is taking on The Ridgeway Challenge 86-Mile Ultramarathon and has chosen to raise funds for the Society. Mark will be attempting to run the entire length of The Ridgeway in one go, with no sleep and no real rest, aiming to complete the full 86 miles in a single effort. If all goes to plan, he is hoping it will take somewhere around 20 hours. 😮
Mark's fundraising target is £1,000.00 and we know he would be hugely thankful if you could make a donation to help him try and achieve his target.
We are in awe and wish him well in his final preparations!

UPDATE! We are all sorted now thank you for your fantastic response!

🎶 Happy Sunday! One of our cd players took a tumble and is now broken! If anyone has a spare radio and cd player combi that is in working order we would be so grateful. Radios are a great way to keep the dogs in our care feeling calm and relaxed. Especially for those dogs with separation anxiety or that have a fear of loud noises like thunder.🎶
