Wonderful celebration for Shirley at Didsbury

The Ladies at Didsbury Golf Club had a wonderful celebration when they met for lunch with their centenarian member Shirley Leak.
Didsbury Lady Captain Margaret Lloyd said: “Until a couple of years ago Shirley was still playing a few holes at the club.
“Her 100th birthday was last November but she was still recovering from an operation for a new hip at that time so the celebration was delayed.
“As always Shirley was in good form and entertained the ladies by using the words- horse, gun and secret to recall events she experienced at the club. Always a good joke teller Shirley was on form with an amusing joke.
“She is an example to us all and well loved and respected.”
As well as golf Shirley has enjoyed other sporting successes and many other worthwhile activities and is a great example to younger players at the club.
As well as being a play therapist and social worker she was a keen writer for many years including a drama for the BBC.
She also had a short but outstanding career as a triathlete back in the 1990’s.
She took on the sport for fun with a half-length triathalon and then went on to win the national championship in the 70-74 age group.
Shirley then joined the British team competing in the World Triathalon championships in Cancun, Mexico. She came second in her age group winning a silver medal for the British team.
Shirley was also a very keen bridge player and worked as a volunteer in the Lowry theatres and still found time to play for the Didsbury’s ladies teams with some success.

Linda looking forward to her new role at Disley

Linda McCay (pictured), a retired lawyer, is relishing the year ahead as Lady Captain of Disley Golf Club.
Linda, who has been a member of Disley GC for eight years, said: “Disley is a gem of a course on the edge of the Peak District with magnificent views over Kinder Scout.
“It’s a welcoming and friendly club where I have made some amazing friends over the past eight years. As well as enjoying golf we have lots of fun and laughs and after all that’s really why we play golf, right?
“My current handicap is 24 and my best was 23.2 and my favourite course, other than Disley is Vale de Lobo Ocean Course on the Algarve- it’s warmer and drier than the UK!.
“My favourite hole at Disley is difficult to chose between the par three 13th for its spectacular views from the tee and the par four 14th where a quarry comes into play on the second shot which is a challenge to get over- and it always feels good to achieve that.
“I will be looking to play golf twice a week as well as playing tennis, hiking, working out in the gym, learning Norwegian and being with my two adorable granddaughters.
“My favourite football team is Manchester United and as our Captain Philip is a Man City fan it should make for some ‘interesting’ conversations on the course and we have both chosen the Kinder Scout Mountain Rescue team to support as our Captain’s charity.
My own golfing highlight is winning Mr Captain’s Day to the ladies in 2023 with a net 63 and finally the only person I would choose to play with me would be Henrik Stenson and no one else!

Sheila ready for an active year at Styal
(with pic)
Sheila Harrison has recently retired after 30 years as a primary school teacher and head teacher and is looking forward to an enjoyable year ahead as the new Lady Captain at Styal GC.
Sheila said: “I have been a member of Styal seriously for about six years having played on the driving range and par three course in the previous four years when I was very busy.
“Styal is a very friendly club with an active ladies section and we welcome people of all abilities and encourage newcomers to get involved.
“There are events on throughout the week to take part in and the monthly mixed BB is also well supported.
“My current handicap is 33.2 after a recent hip operation and I am aiming to play about three times a week as well as watching football (season ticket holder at Manchester United), going to watch live music/ bands, city breaks, going to the cinema, reading and walking.
