This Men’s Health Week, we’re shining a light on something that matters deeply to us; supporting young men before challenges with mental health follow them into adulthood.

That’s why we’re proud to champion SportSmart. A programme using sport and physical activity to positively engage young people aged 11–24. Through trusted community coaches, mentoring, volunteering, and ASDAN‑accredited learning, SportSmart helps young men build confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork, while opening up honest conversations about mental health, safety, and personal development.

Many of the young men who join SportSmart are facing real pressures: low self‑esteem, poor mental health, exploitation, family or financial challenges, or involvement in youth criminality. Early support can change the direction of their lives.

We’re sharing a powerful video today featuring young men who’ve benefited from SportSmart and their voices say more than we ever could🎥

Behind every statistic is a young person who needs support and someone to notice the signs.

Girls are often overlooked, with their experiences and risks going unseen for too long.

Under the Radar is working with partners to change this, raising awareness, improving early identification, and ensuring girls at risk are recognised and supported before it’s too late.

Let’s make sure no girl is left unseen or unprotected.

What if we stopped focusing on what communities lack… and started with what they already have?

For Simon King - a member of our Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) network, that shift changed everything.

Through ABCD, he’s seen the power of putting communities in the driving seat — building on existing skills, relationships and passions to create lasting change.

From shaping funding to supporting grassroots networks like the Essex Shed Movement, this approach is helping create stronger connections, better wellbeing and more sustainable impact.

✅ Start with listening
✅ Build relationships
✅ Trust communities to lead

Because meaningful change doesn’t come from doing things to people, it comes from doing things with them.

At the Power of Movement Youth Mental Health Conference, partners from across Greater Essex came together to make collective pledges to support children and young people.

From creating inclusive spaces for physical activity to actively listening and responding to youth voice, these commitments reflect a shared ambition to improve mental wellbeing through movement.

We look forward to turning these pledges into action.

At our first Power of Movement Conference last week, we heard something powerful: young people describing how movement helped them rebuild confidence, routine and hope.

The Active Essex Foundation brought together partners from across Greater Essex to focus on one shared goal - improving young people’s mental health through physical activity and community support.

Hearing from Dr William Bird MBE and Paralympic champion Ellie Challis reminded us that resilience grows when young people have the right tools, the right people and the right opportunities.

With over 1,500 young people supported and 73% reporting improved emotional wellbeing, the message is clear: movement matters. And when we work together, it changes lives!

AEF welcomed Transpire Training to deliver Youth Mental Health First Aid to another cohort of staff and volunteers from local delivery partners 💙

The training was a great success, with 7 people receiving their certification.

“I would recommend it to other people since everyone experiences mental health and should know how to help out someone in a mental health crisis” – Training attendee

It’s great to receive feedback like this and see the impact this training is having in building confidence and awareness across our local networks.

We’re proud to share the growing impact of the AEF SMART Courses, supporting young people to build confidence, skills and brighter futures.

✅ 40 SMART courses have already been delivered across
✅ 440 young people have completed the programme
✅ 80% achieved an ASDAN accreditation

These results reflect the power of collaborative working with our locally trusted organisations and creating meaningful opportunities for young people through sport and activity. With more courses planned across additional districts, we’re excited to continue expanding this impact.
