We had a wicked time last week in our songwriting workshop where Lewisham’s young wordslingers got together to explore all things writing, working on their lyricism, tone, performance and their connection to words.

🔥🔥🔥🔥

Fuelled by KA fruit punch and inspired by the one and only .a.poet, the words flowed onto paper faster than the drink did into mouths, turning ideas into lyrics, stories into songs and creativity into self-belief.

Check out some of the action!

It’s always an inspiration to see the energy and storytelling of Lewisham’s young creatives as they are given the space to express themselves, collaborate, and explore their identity.

“I loved working collaboratively with other creatives and incorporating each other’s writing styles into our music!”

The session served an intro into the upcoming Fellowship Music Collective project and prepares the young creatives for the exciting songwriting and improvisational workshops taking place throughout the summer term. The skills learned will culminate in a performance at Lewisham Music’s own laid back gig series, Rooftop Sessions!

Check out the link in our bio and come and make music here!

MASSIVE SHOUTOUT to all the young wordsmiths and .a.poet for doing what she does best, taking care of the next generation.

Meet Tendo and Sam as they share powerful insights into what music means to them and how it has a positive impact on their mental health.

“Growing up, I had a lot of mental health issues, feeling unwanted, feeling like there was no place for me society. When I was like 8, I wrote my first song. I just remember spending the whole day writing it. In that moment, it just took me to another place. All this stuff that’s happening around me didn’t matter.”

It’s so we wanted to take a look back at a massively important project we were involved – A Big Conversation, a youth-led research project that looked at the role arts and creativity play in the mental health of young people. As part of this project, we employed and trained an EPIC team of Young Producers who co-created Front Line Young Minds, a podcast series looking at different aspects of music and its relationship with mental health and wellbeing.

Check out our recent blog (via the link in our bio) that takes a look at mental health awareness, watch some videos, listen to the podcasts, and we’ve also linked in some useful websites/organisations.

“Being here at Lewisham Music, it’s a safe space for everybody to kind of be vulnerable together through music, which is what this project’s all about.”

We’re no experts on mental health but we’re constantly exploring the connection between music/creativity and mental health. We want to actively engage, understand, and openly discuss mental health, both within the charity and with everyone we work with.

If you’re struggling with anything then please reach out, if you don’t want to talk then we can at least offer a safe space for you to find a positive outlet, and we’ll be here to support you.
