We spotted some young Lewisham musicians out and about performing alongside musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra for BMW Classics 2026 in Trafalgar Square!

🔥🔥🔥🔥

The London Symphony Orchestra brought serious repertoire, a major conductor, a world premiere, young musicians and a global digital stream into one of the capital’s most symbolically charged civic spaces, and it didn’t disappoint!

Young Lewisham musicians represented, taking part in small sectional rehearsals, full orchestra rehearsals (joined by wind, brass and percussion) and masterclasses with the LSO coaches, then performing as part of the world premiere of Four Dances by Louise Drewett.

Opportunities like this are so important, giving young people the chance to perform alongside professional musicians, experience major stages and see themselves as part of the wider musical community. Taking music out of the concert hall and into Trafalgar Square made it something everyone could share - with young musicians right at the centre of it.

What an amazing concert and experience for them all, and you could easily mistake them for the pros!

Not only that but Nia (pictured) and 2 other Lewisham Music students have got places on the LSO East London Academy Full Programme 2026-27 - EPIC STUFF!

SHOUTOUT to all the young musicians out there and LSO for creating these opportunities!

The rain might have turned up but we’re going to take you back to some sizzling vibes at Rooftop Sessions!!

Here is GeeOne bringing the flaming hot bars, wavy flows, and all-round word slinging with 3 of his tracks - G1FRMSE, 12am in Forest Hill, and Motion 🔥🔥🔥🔥

My name is GeeOne, a grime-inspired rapper from Lewisham, South East London. Growing up through the youth clubs of Forest Hill, I’ve developed a style that blends raw storytelling with soulful production and sharp lyricism. My music reflects real experiences, thoughts and emotions while staying true to my South London roots. I’m focused on bringing honest, energetic music that connects with people.

Each night, the young artists took to Lewisham Music’s rooftop stage to perform intimate, stripped-back sets, testing out new material, sharing their sound with fresh ears, and for some, taking their first step onto the stage, each with one thing in common…BIG VIBES!!!

Rooftop Sessions returned the other week with an epic 3-night series spotlighting 12 emerging artists!!

We’re going to hit you with some sizzling vibes and highlights. Here is pouring out her soul with this ethereal performance of all-time Amy Winehouse classic Back to Black, 1 of 5 tunes performed on the night! AMAZINGLY BEWITCHING!

Angie is a singer/songwriter/producer based in Lewisham who began making music at the age of 7!

Each night, the young artists took to Lewisham Music’s rooftop stage to perform intimate, stripped-back sets, testing out new material, sharing their sound with fresh ears, and for some, taking their first step onto the stage, each with one thing in common…BIG VIBES!!!

Today marks 49 years since the Battle of Lewisham so we wanted to take a look back at the event and its lasting impact, but also say that…

LEWISHAM MUSIC STANDS WITH ALL OUR COMMUNITIES.

We reject prejudice, discrimination, and racism in all its forms. Our work celebrates the diversity of our brilliant borough, and we work every day to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included in our work.

Music has always allowed individuals and communities to explore and celebrate their identities. It is a uniting force which connects us and helps us understand and celebrate different cultures.

Lewisham has a particularly long history of anti-racism activism and protest, and we wanted to take a moment to look back to 1977’s Battle of Lewisham.

It is heart-breaking that 49 years later, the fight for equality goes on. But we are proud to serve a community who have always rejected hatred and championed diversity, something we see every day. Lewisham is also the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary and is proud to welcome migrants, asylum seekers and refugees.

THE BATTLE OF LEWISHAM: A SYMBOL OF RESISTANCE AND THE SOUNDTRACK OF A COMMUNITY - new blog

Today marks 49 years since the Battle of Lewisham when on August 13, 1977, the streets of Lewisham in South East London became the battleground for one of the most significant anti-racist demonstrations in UK history. This pivotal event in the history of British activism not only marked a turning point in the fight against the far-right National Front but also intertwined with Lewisham’s rich cultural and musical heritage, shaping the community’s identity as a symbol of resistance and creativity.

WE’RE JAMMIN!

Last month we teamed up with NU JAM SESSIONS for 2 days of improvisation, collaboration and creativity as part of our Fellowship Music Collective Jam Workshops project!

Young creatives explored what it means to create free flowing music in the moment - using words, emotions and different musical styles as starting points for new ideas. Through guided jams, freestyle exercises and group performances, they developed their listening skills, built confidence and discovered new ways of working together.

Some of the squad even turned out and represented after the project at a live jam at Nu Sessions in Deptford!!

Over the project we explored, improvisation as a songwriting tool; freestyling over live beats; rhythm, melody and musical communication; how listening, trust and giving each other space can transform a jam.

MASSIVE THANKS to NU JAM SESSIONS for creating an open, supportive space where young people could experiment, take risks and learn from one another.

MUSIC AND DISPLACED YOUNG PEOPLE PT.3 (SOUND ON PLEASE!)

This Refugee Week we’re taking a look back at Sonic Minds, our award-winning creative music programme that supported over 300 displaced and care-experienced young people at elevated risk of experiencing mental ill health.

Following on from meeting Oksana, and listening to the SONIC POEM, we finish off the week with this piece of music, written and performed by the young creatives who took part in the project.

The tune beautifully highlights how music transcends language, culture, and personal experience, bringing people together from diverse backgrounds.

I’ve done a bit of transcribing and translating and can tell you that the song is about heartbreak!! 💔
