ENGLAND PLAY TONIGHT 🍻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿v🇭🇷

All games will be shown on BBC or ITV - UK pubs can stay open as late as 2am during the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup under newly confirmed government licensing extensions. This policy is designed to help fans manage the many time zone differences.

🕒 Official World Cup Pub Licensing Extensions

The UK Home Office and Communities Secretary have authorised the following blanket extensions for the knockout rounds when England or Scotland are playing:

• 1:00 AM Closing: Permitted for matches kicking off between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM UK time.

• 2:00 AM Closing: Permitted for late-night matches kicking off between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM UK time.

• Beer Gardens & Outdoor Screenings: Local councils have been instructed to fast-track applications for outdoor screens and temporary pavement licences to maximise tournament celebrations.

So. Where will you be watching the World Cup locally? I’ve added some pubs that are our closest neighbours to Carshalton in Hackbridge, Sutton & Wallington.

Who remembers Gulliver’s shop?

Source: All Our Yeaterdays - A pictorial record of the London Borough of Sutton over the last century (1977 reprinted 1983).

Extract from the book - now slightly out of date:

“This shop, in Stafford Road, Wallington, is still Gulliver’s, and is basically little changed from when this photograph was taken in about 1938; with its coloured Edwardian tiles - many hidden in this picture by the smart little Morris van.

The Spratt’s signs above, however, have now been painted out, and you can no longer buy ‘Best English rose trees’ for 6d each, or packets of seeds (‘always come up’) for 3d.”

AI colourAna Gallegover image - it really brings these old photos to life! (Some good can come from AI).

Shame the trends over the years have been to ‘destroy’ shop fronts - I wonder how many shops still hide yesteryears!

🎭 Hidden behind CryerArts in Carshalton is a remarkable piece of London theatre heritage.

Known as Gemstage LTD, the workshop space contains one of only THREE remaining paint frames in London.

These enormous paint frames are used to create traditional theatre backdrops. Huge canvases are stretched onto the frame and, rather than the artist climbing up and down ladders, the frame itself moves up and down while the painter remains stationary. This allows scenic artists to paint vast stage backdrops with incredible precision and efficiency.

For decades, paint frames like this were an essential part of theatre production, helping to bring everything from West End musicals to dramatic stage sets to life. Today, very few survive, making Gemstage a rare and important link to the craft and history of scenic art.

Right here in Carshalton, behind CryerArts, sits one of London’s hidden creative treasures.

So what is Cryptic? Well it’s a collaboration of some of the scenic artists that work for GemStage CryerArt tenants in the workshop.

Paper Jack

Extract from the book ‘All Our Yesterdays’ reads:

“‘Paper Jack’, a tramp who dressed in rolled newspapers held together with string (except for his shoes which were made from old car tyre inner tubes) passing the Plough Inn at Beddington. He was a well known character in the area, friendly and talkative, except when asked the reason for his strange way of life. He is usually said to have taken to the road after having been jilted in love.

His real name was Alfred Ellis Preece. He was killed by a car in Benson Road, Waddon, in January 1935.”

Do you remember any other local “characters” from the area?

I remember the guy on roller skates who would pirouette his way around town, and the lady who was often seen dressed in what looked like curtains, asking passers-by for a pound.

Special thank you to those who sent me images of Jesusman, Water Tank Man and The Projekt Store for the image of Wizard Man in their shop 19th June 2018.

As always, my posts are drawn from a combination of my ever-growing collection of books and publications, your comments and suggestions, and my own experiences of growing up in this wonderful area.

WHAT A BOOK!

The photographs and artwork are so stunning that I could frame almost every page. If you ever come across a copy, it’s absolutely worth a read.

I love that the typography choice in this book is very 1970s, another glimpse into history this time graphic design.

The radiators are coming out of the Old Rectory, and what a shame to see these beautiful old originals go. They’d have looked right at home in a restoration project!

There seems to be plenty of activity inside now, so work is clearly moving forward. Does anyone know what the plans are?

Another tree - another plaque

This time in All Saints Carshalton graveyard 🪦 standing directly opposite you when you come in from the Talbot Road entrance.

It reads:

“All Saints Church
The path laying, planting and landscaping
on this site from 1985-1986
was carried out by
The London Borough of Sutton
Community Programme Agency
as part of the
Manpower Services Commission Community Programme”

Do you remember the graveyard before these works were carried out?

Another fantastic book by A.E. Jones on Carshalton: The Story of Carshalton House, now St Philomena’s.

The photographs, maps and historical insights throughout are fascinating. I was particularly interested to discover that there was once a boating lake on the grounds, sadly long since dry.

It’s a book well worth picking up if you happen to come across this hidden gem.

Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing some of the most interesting facts and stories from this and other books in my collection in future posts.

Did you study at St Phil’s - with any unique stories?

I remember girls I hung round with when I was a kid that were students there always talked of ghosts on a staircase and the gardens!
