Our final two trainees to share their stories are Marlin and Loyiso:

Marlin already has part time employment with Amakhala Bush Lodge ( ) but has been told that this course will improve his pay and prospects.

Loyiso (2nd from the left in the group picture) was on last year’s course, sent by . Khanya’s Chair, Ade, says he “was the best of the group” and so he asked Loyiso to help him on this project, paying him a small stipend. Loyiso had done a bit of work since the last course but is very hopeful that by doing, and helping with training, on this course, his prospects will improve even more. After the course, Ade received a message from the Kariega Foundation who sponsored Loyiso which said, “This is a good success story for us with Loyiso, he was trained and was assisting with training”. Go, Loyiso! Let’s hope this is the start of greater things!

Next up to share their stories are Xolisa and Lakhanyo:

Also sponsored by Bush Lodge Amakhala, Xolisa is hoping to get employment with Bush Lodge if he can show the necessary skills.

Lakhanyo is from Amakhala Game Reserve ( )too. He dropped out of school earlier this year and is hoping Khanya’s course will improve his employment prospects.

Following Khanya’s latest successful bricklaying project, we thought we’d give some insight into six of the trainees involved.

First up are Calvin and Vuyisani.

Calvin was sent for training by one of our partners, the Kariega Foundation. He currently works as a labourer in the local construction on an ad hoc basis. He enjoys the work but without skills, finds it hard getting long term work. Calvin is hoping that having completed the Khanya course, he will be much more employable.

Vuyisani hails from another of our partners, the Amakhala Foundation (Game Reserve Foundation).
He works on an ad hoc basis for the Bush Lodge at Amakhala and has been told that now he has completed the course satisfactorily, they intend to employ him within their maintenance team. Hurrah!

Tomorrow Ade starts Khanya’s next trade-skills training course in South Africa with partners and . Once again the bricks have been generously donated by Makana Brick SA . Here are a few words from him ahead of that:

“It’s April and I find myself and trowel back in the Eastern Cape.
This time we have six trainees and another project to work on!
We will be attempting to build the walls of a new classroom for the Reception Class at Sidbury primary school.
Carpenter Ken Atkinson is volunteering this time and will be arriving at the weekend to teach the trainees how to fit the roof trusses so the pressure is on to get those walls up asap! Pictures and progress reports to follow over the next two weeks so watch this space!”
