Welsh Senedd votes in favour of Motion 8884 - Severe/Very Severe ME!

Members of Severe ME Difrifol Cymru have been working with Adam Price, MS, for the past year to prepare for Wednesday’s debate.

You can see it here: https://tinyurl.com/mux4pkcr
or read the transcript: https://tinyurl.com/4aumbvja

Context: The Welsh Government (WG) is sharing £8.3m pa amongst its 7 health boards for the development of the Adferiad (Recovery) services for people with ME, Long Covid and other chronic illnesses. WG expects these services to be co-produced at local level and comply with NICE guidance. But, in the absence of a national strategy, a post-code lottery of provision is developing, and there is a danger that those with the most severe needs will continue to receive the least care.

Adam said:
“There are thousands of people in Wales whom we almost never see … because to stay alive they must live in darkness; behind blackout blinds, away from noise, unable to bear light, sound or even touch. They are the people with severe and very severe ME, and they are at the heart of this debate..”

We’re grateful for Adam’s commitment in bringing to the attention of the Senedd the needs of people with severe and very severe ME.

Five Key asks of the Welsh Government:
1. Bring together a National Expert Working Group – comprising HCPs and patient/carer reps to
2. Co-produce an All-Wales Strategy / Delivery plan to ensure equity of service and compliance with NICE guidance across all ages and ALL severity levels;
3. Appoint an All-Wales Clinical Lead – to support complex cases, advise Adferiad teams, guide training, and keep Wales in step with emerging biomedical evidence – with a clear ambition, as expertise grows to develop this into a full All-Wales consultant post;
4. Develop an ME Research Strategy – make Wales one of 5 proposed UK hubs so that research into the biomedical causes of / potential treatments for ME and models of care is integral to the development of the Adferiad services and linked to research collaborations across the UK and the world;
5. A Safety and Equity Guarantee for people with Severe and Very Severe ME – responding to the Prevention of Future Deaths Report of Maeve Boothby O’Neill with clear guidance for hospital admission and nutritional support;

Adam concluded:
…” If our politics is to mean anything, if this place is to mean anything, it's surely that those with the least power, at times in their lives the least energy, sometimes the least ability to speak for themselves, that we recognise them and their needs, and their need for us to care for them collectively as a society..above all, I hope that (patient name) and all the other families, and all those following this debate from darkened rooms, look back on today, they will be able to say, ‘That was when Wales began to see us, to understand us and to act’.”

Severe ME Difrifol Cymru also thanks:
• the many who contacted and shared their lived experience of this devastating illness with their MSs, and those MSs who spoke in the debate on their behalf;
• Jeremy Miles for his positive response on behalf of the WG, and to all those committed health professionals within the Adferiad Teams who are trying to do their very best for people with ME – we want to work with you;
• For the Senedd as a whole which voted to carry the motion through unopposed.
• WAMES, MESiG, ME Voices Wales, Action for ME, ME Association, 25% ME Group and Long COVID Support for backing us - and because ‘We are Stronger Together’!

Welsh Senedd Debate on Severe and Very Severe ME

DEBATE POSTPONED AGAIN - TO 10TH DECEMBER!

We’re sorry to report that there’s been a further postponement of the Welsh Senedd Debate on Motion 8884 – Severe and Very Severe ME - to be led by Adam Price, MS.

We obviously have no control over how Senedd business is managed, and there are many demands on the Senedd timetable, especially in the build-up to next May’s elections.

The debate has been re-allocated to the Plenary Session on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 10th.

There is a public gallery, and it would be great to fill it! The debate will also be live-streamed / recorded on Senedd TV. We’ll let you know more details as soon as we get them.

Adam stresses that personal stories carry great weight in such events - they are the lived experiences which help politicians connect with the lives of their constituents, their voters. With Senedd elections approaching fast, now is a good time to enlist your Senedd Members’ support – because they also want yours!

As ever, if you’d like to get in touch please email: [email protected]

Diolch / Thanks

DEBATE POSTPONED TO 26TH NOV!

Welsh Senedd Debate on Severe and Very Severe ME – 15th October - Postponed to 26th November

Adam Price, MS, was due to lead the Members Debate on Severe and Very Severe ME tomorrow in the Welsh Senedd (Parliament), but on Sunday he suffered a close family bereavement.

The Senedd Business Committee has therefore agreed to allocate a new date for it: Wednesday 26th November - Put it in your diary!

We know that this understandable and unavoidable delay will be a disappointment to people with ME in Wales, and to their families, friends and carers, but we’re grateful that we have a new date for which we can prepare.

Adam stresses that personal stories carry great weight in such events - they are the lived experiences which help politicians connect with the lives of their constituents, their voters.

Other Senedd Members can take part in the debate, including yours, and can add weight to Adam’s presentation.

So, in the meantime, if you’d like to get in touch please email: [email protected]

Thanks

We were really encouraged by the support we had from the many Senedd Members (MSs) who visited the Severe ME Difrifol Cymru stall at Y Farchnad (The Marketplace) in the Senedd on 15th July.

MSs will soon be returning to the Senedd after their long Summer Recess. Now we need them to make their support official – by actually signing up to give their backing to Adam Price’s Motion for a debate about Severe/Very Severe ME in Wales - https://record.senedd.wales/Motion/8884

Y Farchnad was a fantastic start. But now, WE NEED YOU!

If you live in Wales and would like to see this debate happen in the Senedd, then now is the time to help us. Every person in Wales is represented by one Constituency MS and several Regional MSs. We need as many people as possible to contact all of their MSs to ensure we get this debate!

How you can help:

1. Find out who your local Constituency and Regional MSs are via this link https://senedd.wales/find-a-member-of-the-senedd/ - just type in your postcode.

2. Check the list on our website (https://www.500milesfor.me) to see whether your MSs has already signed up to support Motion 8884.

3. Write to your Constituency and Regional MSs, asking them to sign up formally in support of Motion 8884 on provision for people with Severe and Very Severe ME. 4. Use / adapt / personalise the template on our website if that’s helpful.

4. To give your MSs some more info, you could copy and paste the briefing document that we have provided on our website (https://www.500milesfor.me).

5. Please email us at [email protected] to let us know you’ve written / had a response.

6. Consider asking to meet your MS face-to-face if you are able to. We’ve found that these meetings are very effective in getting MSs’ support.

Diolch 💙 Thank you
