A quick reminder that Railway Gardens community member Liz is offering free small group 'Introduction to mindfulness practice' sessions at the Gardens and needs to know if there's enough interest.

The sessions will start from Monday June 15th, 6-7pm. As space is limited, places are on a first-come basis! If you're interested or would like more info please text Liz on 07415685893

Gardening Club this Saturday, June 13th - all welcome!

Can you guess what can caught the Railway Gardeners attention in this pic? It's a beautiful big barrow of compost dug out from our own compost bins, turning all those Wellbeing Cafe tea bags, Nature Club toast crusts, Seal and Bear coffee grounds and Friendly Friday leftovers into black gold. Plus the really big news of the day - Tracey found an onion in there and took it home for tea.

Why not come along to the next gardening club and get involved? No experience is necessary and it's a super friendly and welcoming group, open to all. Come along to Railway Gardens this Saturday, 13th, between 10:30am and 1pm.

What could a greener urban future look like? 🌳 Here's a local event you won't want to miss.

Treescapism is a free exhibition by the Woodland Trust, being hosted by our neighbours at Splott Community Volunteers. Through stories and artworks created by the community of Splott, the exhibition reimagines a greener future for Wales' towns and cities, where trees, green spaces and access to nature are part of the everyday life for everyone. It's a powerful collective vision of what's possible. Make sure to pop by to support this incredible community project!

It's time to say goodbye to our lovely magpie mural - what do you think should go on this stunning bit of wall next? Come along to our mural design session with local artist Dora Furnival on July 3rd and help plan something amazing.

We're pretty sad to see the magpie go. His name is Glanhawr and he's a wise litter picking bird, designed by the fantastic Martine of Testiles Reimagined, as part of our Guardian Creatures project waaaaay back in 2019. This project saw Cardiff residents imagining new local magical beings and spirits to protect the places they love around the city, then we worked with artists to bring their creations to life. Glanhawr was originally brought into being to protect Cathays Cemetery from litter, but he came to live with us at Railway Gardens instead.

On a super chilly day in December 2020 the crew from GoodGym kindly came to clear the brambles and do some socially distanced wall painting, and Glanhawr was then painted by Peaceful Progress. He sat there and watched while the whole site was pulled to bits and put back together again in the shape of Railway Gardens. He has greeted every visitor since day one - so it's definitely a sad moment but we're also so excited to see what comes next!

Do you want to run your event or activity in your community but you're a bit worried about the whole health and safety thing?

Join us on Monday evening for a one hour online training to make it simple, keep everyone involved in your event safe, and give you the confidence to get planning.

If you're not a member of our volunteer team then we ask for a small donation to take part if possible, but if that would prevent you joining then just let us know.

More than 40,000 people experience a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital in the UK every year. On Saturday July 25th Hannah will be walking 40,000 steps, or a little over 17 miles, from Pontrypridd to Railway Gardens in Splott to raise money for a publicly accessible defibrillator for the community there.

The first 3-5 minutes in a cardiac arrest situation can be life changing. Fewer than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest; using a defibrillator within 3–5 minutes can increase survival rates to 50–70%

Railway Gardens welcomes over 7,500 people through its gates every year. In addition we want to make it as easy as possible for local people to access a defibrillator. While we are lucky to have several defibrillators around Splott, survival rates fall by 10% with every minute without CPR or defibrillation; Hannah is therefore hoping to raise the £1,680 needed to install a publicly accessible defibrillator outside of the Railway Gardens gates.

Can you help her meet this goal? Every donation helps. We are grateful for the generous support of AED Donate who have kicked off fundraising with a £300 donation from their community fund.

Hannah also invites you to join her to walk the last stretch of the walk, either Cardiff Bay (at roughly 1pm), or the Magic Roundabout (at roughly 1:30pm), depending on how far you fancy walking!
