Green Squirrel We are Cardiff’s bridge between community wellbeing and climate and nature action, making space for everyone to shape and share a greener future.

We inspire and support everyone to create a future they feel good about, for the people, places, and planet they love. Green Squirrel was founded in 2012 and became a social enterprise in 2018. From our beginnings as two friends teaching green skills in Cardiff’s coffee shops, we’ve established a thriving community resilience hub and become a leading voice in Cardiff and South Wales for the power of communities to take powerful and just action on the climate and nature crisis.

YOU are welcome at our Bikefest at Railway Gardens on October 27th! Your bike, scooter, trike, wheelchair, assisted cycle or unicycle is welcome at Bikefest too - we want to celebrate and support everyone who gets about on 1-3 wheels* with a fun day of activities, food, and prizes, plus a special fancy dress bike ride!

So here's something you might not know: we often get grants from funders to run specific activities, which is amazing, but most grant money can only be used for the direct costs of running those activities.

But when you make a donation, or hire our venue, we can use the money you gift for ANYTHING that's needed to keep things running! This is known as 'unrestricted funding' and for organisations like ours it is pure magic. So when something needs fixing, we run out of tea bags or loo roll, or there's an unexpected emergency, your support is key. The everyday costs might not be very glamorous but they are 100% essential for keeping a space like Railway Gardens open, safe, comfy and thriving.

If you want to spread a little everyday magic then please do consider becoming a Squirrel Supporter with a small monthly donation, or making a one-off donation. We just dug up this old video from the day we finally got the keys to Railway Gardens - it's so weird to see it looking like this! It was a long and wobbly journey to get to this stage, and covid made things so much harder... then on the day we thought we'd finally be unlocking those gates we ended up spending an hour having to crowbar our way in 😂 Felt good when we finally got in there though...

We need to ask for your help. We're finding it really, really hard at the moment to find enough volunteer support for some specific roles and we urgently need more people to lend a hand. We're a tiny staff team and we're also really conscious of making sure the amazing volunteer who do work with us regularly don't get burnt out.

The key things we really need your help with right now are...

🐾 After school nature club, every Wednesday in term time. Set up and pack down help needed as well as working directly with families.
👻 Stewards, crafts, and food volunteers for the Halloween Bikefest on October 27th
🪏 Volunteer Head Gardeners to care for the growing space on a weekly basis
🎟️ Volunteers who can help plan and lead on events and fundraisers

Welcome to the team Sam! Sam is our new Climate Justice Wales Project Officer at Green Squirrel. He will be working closely with Race Equality First to lead on the delivery of climate action activities with Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities across Wales.

Sam shared a little about himself... He comes from an academic and research background, having previously held roles at the John Madejski Centre for Reputation, Henley Business School, and most recently, the Institute of Business Ethics. He is undergoing a career transition into sustainability and environmental management so that he can more directly influence change-making at a community level. He has a particular interest in the application of circular economy principles in everyday practices.

In his spare time, he can be found supporting the local art and music scene, on nature walks, playing sports, and excessively pondering about Fantasy Premier League-related decisions (as inconsequential as it is in the grand scheme of things [Sam's words, we're not judging!]).

This is a tree equity map of Cardiff. Green = more trees, orange = less trees.

Check out the southern arc, a historically deprived area. Is it fair that people in lower income areas have less access to nature, less shade and hotter streets?

We think tree inequity is an easy fix that would create a fairer, greener, more biodiverse and more climate resilient Cardiff.
