A St David’s Guide to Trick-or-Treating
Trick-or-treating can be a fun way for children to feel part of their community – but it’s not for everyone.
Some children find it too busy, too noisy, too unpredictable, or simply not enjoyable. If your family chooses to skip it, remember that’s completely okay!
If you do decide to head out together, here are a few gentle tips to help make the evening calm, kind and enjoyable for all:
1. Look for the pumpkin signal
Only knock on doors where a lit pumpkin or decorations are on show. It’s an easy way to see who’s happy to take part.
2. Keep groups small
Large crowds can feel overwhelming for some children. Smaller groups help everyone move at a comfortable pace.
3. One treat is plenty
Most houses put out bowls of sweets. Taking just one helps make sure there’s enough for others.
4. A simple thank you goes a long way
Even if someone offers something unusual or handmade, a kind thank-you helps keep the evening friendly.
5. No need to be brave
If a house is too spooky, or the night feels too loud or busy, it’s fine to step back. Following your child’s lead helps them feel safe and supported.
6. End the evening gently
Most families wrap up by around 7pm. A calm finish can help children settle afterwards.
Whether your Halloween is out and about in costumes or cosy at home with a film and a few treats, we hope it’s a warm, relaxed evening for you and your child.
From everyone at St David’s, wishing you a gentle and enjoyable night.
