'It has been an incredible journey - one that I will never forget.'

A big thank you to Russell, who completes his MilesforThomas challenge today, driving over 1,100 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats, raising more than £1,200! Russell's grandson Thomas has recently finished his chemotherapy treatment and his journey is the inspiration for Miles for Thomas.

Since leaving Land's End last week, Russell has travelled across Wales, England and Scotland, raising funds and awareness along the way. On his way through Cardiff, Russell has stopped by the Latch Offices here Children's Hospital for Wales, before continuing on to visit some of the UKs most spectacular scenery at Bannau Brycheiniog and the Scottish Lochs.

'Miles for Thomas has been my way of celebrating his courage, resilience and determination while also raising awareness of childhood cancer' Russell said.

Thankyou for your support and for your dedication to raising awareness for childhood cancer in Wales. And thank you to all who contributed to the journey providing petrol or a place to stay along the way, we really appreciate your generosity.

We are wishing Russell all the best on completing his challenge and reaching John O'Groats today, his more than week long challenge coming to a close at the farthest edge of the UK, before making the long trip back home in time to see Thomas ring the end of treatment bell!

Thankyou to everyone who was able to attend our West Wales Coffee Morning yesterday!

We had a really lovely morning at the Coffee Alley, Gwernllwyn, where we enjoyed their delicious homemade cakes, and their fantastic space for our families to catch up in.

The bowling alley proved to be a big hit, giving both the children and parents a chance to take on the lanes, although the kids did walk away the undisputed champions this time. 'I had such a fun time' - LC

A big thanks to Wyn and Christine, members of the West Wales Latch Branch, who were able to attend. We're so lucky to have such a fantastic community, and we're delighted to be able bring so many people together to share some smiles, laughs and great company!

🌈🔔Congratulations Kooper!🔔🌈

In 2024, Kooper was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, a rare form of cancer that develops in the light detecting tissues of the eye, that mainly affects children under the age of 3.

Kooper was treated at the paediatric oncology unit in Birmingham, and required multiple rounds of treatment over 16 months; a round trip of more than 200 miles from the families home. His treatment consisted of intra - arterial chemo, injections into his affected eye, radioactive plaques, and then finally enucleation.

With the conclusion of his treatment, Kooper was able to ring the bell on Rocket Ward with his family to cheer him on! Well done Kooper, we can't wait to see where your next chapter takes you! 💜

We need your help. Will you stand with us?

Having cancer at a young age is different and the impact is unique, and long lasting.

That's why, together with CCLG: The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association, Young Lives vs Cancer, Teenage Cancer Trust, MOVE Against Cancer Charity, and The Joshua Tree, we are asking the First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Health to re-affirm their commitment to children and young people with cancer and to work with us, and those we support, to build a better system of care and support.

Your support can help influence the support for children and young people with cancer in Wales for years to come.

10 Climbs in 24 Hours!

A big thankyou to Jamie who recently completed the 2026 10 Y Fan challenge, whilst raising a total of £297 in aid of Latch, with plenty of support and encouragement from those around him. 'The support from my family, friends and colleagues was amazing with loads of personal messages to keep me going.' Jamie said.

The 10 Y Fan is an annual challenge where participants climb the highest peak in South Wales, Pen Y Fan, 10 times in 24 hours. Upon completing the event, Jamie had scaled a total of more than 29,000 feet, which is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest!

'The support and services Latch offer families in the worst of times is immense and well worth raising money for', Jamie said when speaking about taking on the mountain of a challenge.

The climb itself wasn't the only difficult part, Jamie said 'Doing the event through the night was hard as it starts at 6pm so your naturally out of sync which is difficult to train for.' But the view during the sunset and the sunrise must've been worth it!

Once again, thank you very much to Jamie. We really appreciate your effort and dedication when taking on this Himalayan sized challenge in aid of Latch.

“The fundraising I do for Latch helps me to feel connected to Paul. He was a kind and gentle boy and I think he would have liked me continuing to support the charity."

Helen Gravelle, 71, founded of the West Wales Latch branch, which has been operating for 30 years, and raised more than £500,000 for Latch in that time.

Thankyou to all of our volunteers, who go above and beyond to help support the work that we do, we couldn't do it without you!

Volunteers play a vital role in every charity, and Latch is no different. From attending events, to collecting donations, and everything in between, our volunteers show up day in and day out, rain, hail or shine. Together, we're working to make sure no family in Wales faces childhood cancer alone.

From all of us here at Latch, and all Latch families, thankyou for your incredible work and support, it makes a world of difference 💜💜💜

🌈🔔 Congratulations Sophia! 🔔🌈

In May 2023, when Sophia was 5 years old, she began experiencing headaches and then sudden eyesight problems — blurry vision, squinting and double vision. After urgent investigations, the families world fell apart when they were told she had a pilocytic astrocytoma, a type of brain tumour.

Sophia needed emergency surgery straight away to release the dangerous build‑up of fluid in her brain that was causing her vision problems. Just two weeks later, she underwent another operation to place a VP shunt, which now continuously helps to drain the fluid and keep her safe.

She then began two and a half years of chemotherapy, facing every challenge head on. And now, exactly three years after her diagnosis, she and her family finally reached the moment they had dreamed of — Sophia rang the bell, signalling the end of her treatment.

'We are unbelievably proud of her' said her family. 'We also want to thank all the wonderful nurses and doctors who cared for her throughout this journey, and the incredible Latch team, who helped us create precious memories during such a difficult time by organising outings and holidays that brought joy back into our lives.'

Sophia even raised an amazing £3,688.75 for Latch, which included selling her hand‑crafted bracelets at local stalls in her neighbourhood — a wonderful way to help support other families in similar situations to her own.

We are so grateful, so excited to see everything Sophia will achieve next 💜
