🏠 Know Your Rights: The TV Licensing Knock

If you don’t have a TV license, an unannounced visit can feel intimidating. But remember: you are in control of your doorstep.

If a TV Licensing officer visits:

Identify: Ask who they are before engaging.

Keep it Brief: You don’t need to provide your name or any household details.

The Golden Rule: You are under no legal obligation to let them inside or sign any paperwork.

The Exit: You can simply say, "No thank you, please leave the property," and close the door.

The Reality: They are essentially salespeople with no automatic right of entry. Stay calm, stay polite, and know your rights! 🛡️

The TV Licence is under review, and the BBC is getting desperate. 📺⚠️

One of their "solutions" is to tether the TV Licence directly to your Council Tax. We think this is the worst possible move, but here is the good news: it’s almost legally impossible to pull off.

Why it’s a non-starter:

Devolution: Council Tax is a devolved matter. The UK Government can’t just force this on Scotland, Wales, and NI without a massive political fight or stripping away powers—which would threaten the Union itself. 🇬🇧

Council Refusal: Local authorities rejected this in the 90s, and they’ll do it again. It adds massive admin costs to already struggling councils.

The Cost: Increasing Council Tax bills to fund the BBC would be a PR nightmare for any local government.

If you don't need a licence, you don't need to tell them who you are. The "No Licence Needed" declaration is a choice, not a law.

1️⃣ Don't provide details for a service you don't use.
2️⃣ Don't renew a declaration once it expires.
3️⃣ Do aim for "The Legal Occupier" status.

🛑 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗡𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱" 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 🛑

We’ve seen a few people giving out incorrect information on the No Licence Needed (NLN) Declaration recently. Let’s clear up the facts.

𝟭. 𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗡𝗢! You are not legally required to declare that you do not need a TV Licence. You don't have to prove a negative to a private company.

𝟮. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀? 𝗡𝗢. This is a common misconception. If you read the small print, they are very clear that they "may visit" to confirm the declaration is correct. We have many members who received a visit anyway after filling it in. It offers zero protection.

𝟯. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀? 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲—𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁. They "sell" the declaration on the basis that they won't contact you for a year (they recently reduced this from two years). However, many people still get emails or letters anyway.

𝟰. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁: The NLN declaration is an information-gathering exercise by Capita. They want your personal details (Name, Email, Phone). Why give your private data to a company like that?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗿" 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 🏆 If you don't fill in the form, the letters will eventually be addressed to "The Legal Occupier." This is the 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱. It means they have no idea who lives there, which makes it much harder for them to build a case or obtain a warrant.

If you DO give them your name and they later claim you're watching TV without a licence, they already have your ID and a signed statement from you to use in court.

𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆: Protect your privacy. Don't do their admin for them. Stay anonymous, stay as "The Legal Occupier," and just bin the mail. 🗑️

Thank you to all our wonderful group members, both young and old. We wish you and your families a very Happy and Joyous Christmas.
As the festive season descends upon us like a glitter‑covered tornado — complete with rogue tinsel, weaponised wrapping paper, and the distant war‑cry of someone discovering they’ve run out of batteries — we’ll be taking a little well‑earned downtime. The group will be officially paused on 24th December at 18:00, because, frankly, survival requires focus, snacks, and strategic napping.
We’ll un‑pause the group on Boxing Day, when you may once again join us in our heroic, over‑the‑top, and entirely noble crusade for freedom and justice regarding the TV licence. The battle resumes, comrades — armed with leftover turkey and questionable levels of enthusiasm.
And then, in a twist worthy of a dramatic trilogy, we shall pause the group again on New Year’s Eve at 17:00. Why? Because it’s New Year’s Eve, and none of us will be doing anything remotely productive. We’ll be far too busy getting a wee bit tipsy, dodging rogue party poppers, and pretending we understand the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne.

We love our members on our group and we always want to protect them from any unsolicited messages.

As such we will take action against people that to send unsolicited messages. Especially where it is to instigate a response because someone has accused you of working for TVL or the BBC. The comments are made on a public group so why not defend them on a public group instead of running to someone's private inbox.

Then to send a private message to one of the admin team accusing them of "continually misinforming people" oh and challenging them to post the private message. Well here it is in all it's glory.

Yep our admin and mods get accused of being in the employ of TVL and BBC all the time, so much so that it doesn't bother them.

Now who has earned a ban from our group for sending unsolicited mails.....

We’ve had a big rise in new members recently — unsurprising after the BBC were exposed 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 for misleading the public following the Panorama documentary.

Good afternoon everyone, we have noticed a few people sharing our graphics in the comments of posts across Facebook, we don't mind this as it is helping raise awareness.

Recently though we have seen a few people use our graphics on their own posts in groups and mentioning others that are against the TV Licence in these posts but failing to mention our page or the creator of our graphics James Stewart.

All we are asking is that we are recognised properly by people tagging out page or James as it's only fair people are recognised for their work.
