Student Advocacy Group

Student Advocacy Group NOW IS THE TIME TO BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD A response was received from the Rt. Honourable Gordon Brown on our demo.

The Student Advocacy Group is comprised of students and lecturers belonging to the University of Kent at any stage of study, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, who are interested in taking action on key issues of international law.

*StAG over the years has being engaged in a number of exciting activities, getting involved in International Law.

*StAG petitioned and organised a demonstration

to Number 10 Downing Street (London) on the controversial immigration rules in the United Kingdom and monitoring processes affecting foreign students. Today it has become common knowledge that the measures introduced have been insufficiently thought through.

*Position papers and discussions were organised on the failed Terrorism Bill; plight of the Chagos Islanders, Rendition of terrorist suspects etc, and also on the hot topic of the right to water. We also held discussions on the Jasmine Revolutions which spread across the Arab world, and we debate regularly on current affairs in International and National news. Also we gave solidarity to the political prisoners in Mayanmar, joining Amnesty International’s campaigns in this area.

*In 2008 StAG sent representatives to the unique event of the commemoration of one of the leading advisory Opinions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) - Western Sahara Case (ICJ Rep 1975 12). Members of the group participated by reading passages of the judgment at the steps of the School of Oriental and African Studies at a publicised and well attended event. In 2011 we invited representatives of the Polisario (the government of Western Sahara) to inform students of the issues that the people have and are facing, and we hope to continue to show our support to the people living in Western Sahara. StAG operates a blog on matters of international law and diplomacy: http://www.kent.ac.uk/law/cecil/what.html . The blog is featured on the Centre for Critical International Law website. All members of the StAG are welcome to contribute to this blog and we hope to make it one of the more lively law related blogs at Kent Law School. Just in 2010/2011; StAG has been involved with the Scholars at Risk Network; action to aid persecuted lawyers such as Nazrin Sotueh and action to the aid of civilians who faced persecution such as Ai Weiwei and Sakineh Ash*tani. We are organising to host this year The Human Rights Intervention Training Programme (as est. by the UK Law Society)

Urgent protests are required to support Itai Dzamara, journalist, pro-democracy activist and leader of the protest group Occupy Africa Unity Square. He was abducted at a barber shop on the morning of 9 March in Harare’s Glen View suburb. He was abducted by five men driving a white truck with concealed registration number plates. The men accused him of stealing cattle before handcuffing him and taking him away. Attempts by members of his family and human rights lawyers to establish his whereabouts have been unfruitful.

Human rights, right of freedom of expression, right to fair trial, ability to challenge authority and express discontent all out of the window. :@ [angry face] Police State!

The Court of Appeal rejects seven of 10 appeals by people jailed over August's riots and looting in England.

Hi Everyone,

Just to reintroduce myself, I'm Subashini (aka Vash), the Chair of StAG. It was great seeing you there at our first meeting :D. Please take a minute to read the message from StAG below.

Next week on Thursday 20th October we're holding a social dinner, around 6:30.
If you are up for joining us please confirm via email soon, as I am going to try and get book us a table somewhere (proabably Boho.)
It's a good opportunity for StAG committee candidates to meet other people and canvass ideas and support. Check out our facebook/ moodle page at some of the work we've done, and tell us how you'd improve this year!
Usually we have a "theme" and in light of the SC judgement given on the 12th October 2011 we'll be celebrating the rights to family life (article 8 of the ECHR) and marriage (article 13 of ECHR).
(For those geeky here's the judgement: http://www.supremecourt.gov.uk/docs/UKSC_2011_0022_Judgment.pdf).

Talk tomorrow:
The first of the environmental law guest speakers talks is tomorrow – Monday 17 October, 6pm Eliot EX9 - and is being given by James Thornton, CEO of the environmental NGO ClientEarth.
James’s work spans policy, citizen enforcement and legal activism. Details can be found at
http://www.kent.ac.uk/law/envlaw/calendar/index.html. Although part of the environmental law PG series, this should be of interest to anyone interested in legal activism, cause lawyering and so on.

Housekeeping:
For those who would like to get involved please join our moodle page (If you log into moodle --> search all modules ---> CeCIL StAG --->Under administration ---> Enrol me to CeCIL StAG. We advise that members subscribe to all forums
To join the official mailing list: (as we're having technical difficulties to do so at the moment)
lists.kent.ac.uk ---> log in with Kent username ---> search kls-stag ---> subscribe.
Also "like" us on Facebook and check out our wall every so often - ex-students tend to post under it various opportunites. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Student-Advocacy-Group/166563226717227
