Robert Stillman is a saxophonist, improviser, and composer with a radical commitment to spontaneity and process. He regularly collaborates with Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner as a touring solo support for and performing member of The Smile, as well as in projects led by Skinner, Dave Okumu, and co-led with Sean Carpio and Anders Holst.

Caius Williams is a double bassist / guitarist from London. He works in collaboration with others, alongside various solo projects, and often works with improvisation and explorations of resonance and perception.

He is in the collaborative groups ‘Crosspiece’ (with Theodora Laird), ‘Argia’ (with Tara Cunningham & Theo Guttenplan). He also works as guitarist/bassist for feeo, and as an improvisor, with musicians including Steve Noble, Tom Challenger, Charles Bullen, Zheng Hao, Maggie Nicols, Mark Wastell, Rory Salter, Regan Bowering, Sachiko M and Mark Sanders.

Kent based troubadour Liam Magill, who enjoyed significant success with his band Syd Arthur, has returned with a powerful set of new songs. An exceptionally gifted guitar player, songwriter and performer, his music evokes the sounds of his hometown Canterbury greats but with a steely 21st century vision.

Sam Bailey has released an EP called Playing and Speaking made from recordings at Free Range events 10 years ago.

This is the first release on a new bandcamp label called Free Range Recordings. We plan to release a recording each month for the next 7 months.

THURSDAY 08.10.26 Gracie / St Mary’s Observatory / / Handbells at [NEW VENUE] St Peter's Anglican Church from 7pm. Free entry (donations welcome).

Bassie Gracie is a punk performance poet known for her musings as a musician, feel good feminism and general silliness. Her show combines jokes, anecdotes and rhyming couplets, intended to inspire, amuse and excite.

St. Mary's Observatory is a psychedelic Marian jam band orbiting the Cantigas de Santa Maria — King Alfonso the Wise's extraordinary 13th-century collection of 420 songs to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Medieval melodies collide with drones, reeds and strings opening strange portals between devotional music, folk tradition, improvisation and the present.

Unruly Duet are Sam Bailey (piano) and David Leahy (double bass) who play old jazz tunes with joy and respect and anarchy, playfully revisiting their musical pasts with mischief and freedom.

Philip Bedford is a composer for (and world authority on) handbells.

Free Range starts this week!

The first event in our new venue will be a bit like a psychedelic village fete. Puppets and masks and a handbell workshop welcome you into the church from 7pm with Josh and Liam Magill running a bar in the library. At 8pm, the poet Gracie will take the stage, followed by Unruly Duet playing wonky jazz and St Mary's Observatory's playing 13th century devotional songs to the Virgin Mary (think the Wickerman meets The Incredible String band).

The new venue is St Peter’s Anglican Church in Canterbury. This is the church near the Cricketer's Pub in Canterbury High Street (on the same side of the street as the pub). The address is 15 St Peter's St, Canterbury CT1 2BQ. Don't go to St Peter's Methodist church by mistake!

Doors will open at 7pm, performances at 8pm and the evening will be finished by 10pm. Entry is free.

Early arrival is recommended!

RECAP: We've got 8 amazing events happening over October and November featuring feminist poetry, 13th century devotional songs to the Virgin Mary, jazz, handbells, Robert Stillman, Liam Magill, a folk play about AI, a play about witches, desire and play, a chamber concert about memory, absurdist German poetry and free improvisation, magical folk story rituals and an explosive big band playing John Zorn's Bagatelles (this last event will be taking place at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre).

This weekend is the October edition of our Open Stage event (7pm Saturday 3rd October at The Moorings Cafe, Water Lane, Canterbury). The theme this month is 'O The Horror!'

All forms of adventurous performance practice are welcome. We find these events consistently funny, surprising and heart-warming.

PREVIEW: FR318 John Zorn's Bagatelles 20.11.26 (at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre)

A rare opportunity to hear John Zorn's Bagatelles arranged for a stunning big band by trumpeter, composer and bandleader, Sam Eastmond. Featuring 13 of the best improvising musicians in the UK, this band recorded the Bagatelles for Zorn’s Tzadik label in 2023 to rave reviews.

Eastmond’s artful arrangements lurch from Ellingtonian swing to colliery brass band, laced with fragments of Hollywood scores, surf rock and klezmer music (the Guardian)

This event is promoted by Free Range in collaboration with the Gulbenkian Arts Centre.

Tickets for this event are free to regular Free Range donors. The Gulbenkian box office will have a list of the people who donate on a monthly basis to Free Range. If you would like to set up a monthly donation to Free Range click on the QR code.

PREVIEW: FR317 Free Women: Folk Hole | 19.11.26, doors 7pm at NEW VENUE St Peter's Anglican Church Saint, Peter's Street, Canterbury, CT1 2BQ.

Join Free Women as we dive down the folk hole, bathing in the forests of our fears about the present and future worlds. In a place filled with waste, where the AI data centre wants your water, your words, your data - what forms of community, of the sacred, can be made? Expect ritual, folk song, storytelling, film, dance, and the odd bit of magic.

PREVIEW: FR316 Elations (David Leahy, Christoph Irmer, Mitch Heinrich) / Alexis & Kat | 12.11.26, doors 7pm at NEW VENUE St Peter's Anglican Church Saint, Peter's Street, Canterbury, CT1 2BQ.

Elations trio is made up of double bassist David Leahy and .irmer (violin) and Mitch Heinrich (voice), both from Wuppertal, Germany. As well as being a vocal improviser, Mitch is a published author of Dada poetry with readings of this material becoming an important feature of this trio's performance. This performance will also mark the UK release of their second cd entitled 'Bauma Beiten' recorded live in Germany in April this year.
