"Sadly, Fruitworks, the co-working business that has provided the venue for Free Range events for almost 10 years, is closing at the end of this month. I found this out during our last event, the fabulous Treeline event with Graham Fitkin.

After hearing the news I sat there, listening to this slowly accumulating tree-inspired music, thinking of the hundreds of times I have shared this experience with people in that space. I am so grateful for this. Thank you to everyone who comes to Free Range events and especially to those of you who donate and sustain this improbable endeavour. Free Range events will continue in October in a new venue. Watch this space for news of our new venue."

An update for fans of Free Range Open Stage. The team will be taking a much deserved break in August.

The series will return on Saturday 5th September The Mooring Cafe & Bar as per usual. The theme will be 'What we did on our Holidays'

Treeline is a creative musical project connecting communities across Europe to their environments, trees and forests. Composer is cycling 2500 miles, working with communities to collect data and record trees from old growth forests from Carpathian Mountains to Epping Forest.

In this performance Graham will play some excerpts from the piece, explain the technology and talk about how he records trees and uses their sounds within the music.

Update: the Free Range Summer season is now over. Thank you to everyone who came, took part, donated or told their friends about our events.

Our Autumn season begins on 8th October and includes a folk play about AI, a chamber orchestra, an absurdist German poet, a new show from Free Women and John Zorn's Bagatelles played by an all-star UK big band arranged and conducted by Sam Eastmond (the Zorn show will be at the Gulbenkian, tickets are free for monthly Free Range donors, a discount code will be included in a future email).

Some of you may have heard on social media that the Fruitworks coffee shop has, sadly, closed. This will not affect Free Range events. We will continue to run events at Fruitworks throughout October and November 2026.

A reminder Graham Fitkin's 'Treeline' will take place from 6-7pm at Fruitworks, CT1 2NP on Monday 20th July. Entry is free but booking is essential. You can book here.

If you’re coming to the open stage on Saturday - if you can could you bring your favourite book of philosophy (define that as boldly as you wish) and a household item with you? No worries if you can’t we’ll have some of our own to hand. We have a living sculpture set a-brewing.

This week sees the July edition of our Open Stage event (7pm Saturday 4th July at The Moorings Cafe, Water Lane, Canterbury). The theme this month is moon/freedom?.

All forms of adventurous performance practice are welcome. We find these events consistently funny, surprising and heart-warming.
