Queens it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of an original Queen, Andrea Brown nee Cunningham (Class of 1959), who made her peaceful transition at the National Chest Hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Queen Andrea holds a special place in the history of The Queen's School. She was among the original fifty-one students who entered the school when the former Doric Hotel was permanently converted into The Queen’s School and officially opened on Monday, January 11, 1954, by Dr. Cyril Garbett, The Archbishop of York.
Queen Andrea was one of the voices at the opening of our school singing the hymns, “Praise My Soul the King of Heaven" and our school song, "Lord of All Hopefulness.” The school was then led by founding Headmistress Anne Chambers.
Andrea embraced and lived out the Archbishop’s inspiring charge:
“The real purpose of education is the development of the whole personality of the child so that the child may be able to use any gifts or talents he or she possesses for the greater glory of God and for the service of his fellowmen…producing useful citizens of sound moral virtue.”
She carried this guiding principle with her to Canada and continued to embody it throughout her life. Following the loss of her beloved husband, she returned to Jamaica, where she spent her retirement years in faithful service and quiet dignity.
Queen Andrea’s life was a shining example of grace, faith, and commitment to others. As one of our pioneering Queens, she helped lay the foundation for generations of students who would follow in her footsteps.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, classmates, and all who were blessed to know and love her.
May she rest in eternal peace.
VIRTUTE ET SAPIENTIA FLOREAT
May She Flourish in Virtue and Wisdom.
