An update on our fundraising appeal for a new van 💚

“When our van was stolen, we were at real risk of our operations grinding to a halt, and not being able to provide food for the people in Cambridge who needed it. But what happened next has left everyone at Cambridge City Foodbank both humbled and inspired.

We have been absolutely blown away by the response to what was a tragic and heartbreaking situation and, in less than a week, our appeal has hit our target of £15,000. Thanks to our incredible community of supporters, we will be able to source a suitable replacement van and continue providing food for people facing hunger and hardship in Cambridge.

Behind that figure is real people who saw what happened and decided to help. Every single donation, whatever its size, has made a huge difference to our charity and every person we serve and, while words can’t really express the sense of gratitude we have for your incredible support, as Chair of Trustees, I extend my sincere thanks to each and every one of you. You have shown, once again, what a special and supportive community exists in Cambridge.

As we celebrate the remarkable response to this appeal, every day, people in our city are at risk of facing hunger and hardship. Any further donations we receive on our JustGiving appeal will help ensure that food is available for people who need it.” – Stephen Thornton, Chair of Trustees, Cambridge City Foodbank

Heartbreaking news – our van has been stolen and vandalised 💔

On Tuesday evening, we had our van stolen and stripped for parts, rendering the vehicle a total write-off.

We are in absolute shock and simply cannot believe that anyone would do this to a charitable organisation that exists to help local people in need.

Our insurance provider has loaned us a temporary 14-day replacement van but, beyond this, we will no longer have the van to transport vital food items to people facing hunger and hardship across Cambridge.

Callous criminals may have stolen our van, but they will never take our hope and belief in the power of community but, right now, we need you more than ever. We are in desperate need and have launched an urgent fundraising appeal.

If you have anything to possibly give, please do consider exploring our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/cambridgecityfoodbankvan

Last week, we wrote to Daniel Zeichner to raise an important issue ahead of the Autumn Budget.

After we signed an open letter to the Prime Minister from Foodbanks across the UK calling for housing support to be reconnected with local rents, we also raised this issue with Cambridge’s local MP.

The vast gap between the Local Housing Allowance and local rents is placing additional pressure on households across the city, forcing thousands to turn to our Foodbank for support.

We hope the Government will consider the impact this is having as it prepares for the budget.

A little sweetness can go a long way! 🍯

Cambridge University Library’s beekeeper chose to support our Foodbank by selling jars of honey from the library’s hives.

Over 40 jars of honey were harvested, with sales raising an incredible £426! That’s un-bee-lievable!

We’re so grateful for this thoughtful way of raising funds for our Foodbank, and to everyone who bought a jar and helped turn locally produced honey into vital support for people facing hunger and hardship in Cambridge.

Thank you to everyone involved 🐝

Have you ever donated an item through one of our supermarket donation bins?

Pictured below is our newly designed and branded donation bin, situated in a local Waitrose & Partners (Cambridge). 📸

Supermarket donation bins are often our supporters’ go-to way to donate. Whether during the weekly shop or popping in to grab picky bits for tea, dropping one item into our donation bins makes a huge difference to people facing hunger and hardship in Cambridge.

However, recently, the number of supermarket-sourced donations has been falling. The high cost of living has forced generous people to refocus on their own needs in difficult times.

We wanted to ask the community: is there anything we can do differently to drive supermarket donations? Comment your ideas below.

Next week marks the Autumn Equinox 🍃🍂

As the seasons change, household budgets can come under even more pressure. As temperatures cool, rising energy bills, unexpected costs or changes in circumstances can make it difficult to afford the essentials.

If you are finding things difficult this autumn, please know you don’t have to face it alone.

If you think you or someone you know could benefit from our support, please reach out.
