💚🧵 A very special visitor to Men’s Hems this evening! 🪡

We were absolutely delighted to welcome Kathryn Fisher, Green Party of England & Wales councillor for Petersfield ward, to our Men’s Hems session tonight!

Kathryn has been a wonderful advocate for Sew Positive within Cambridge City Council, and we really value their support for the work we do in our local communities. 💚

🌍 Sustainability is at the very heart of our ethos. From repairing and reusing textiles to upcycling fabrics and sharing practical sewing skills, we believe that looking after our planet and looking after each other go hand in hand.

But sustainability is about people too. 💗 Creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where people can connect, build confidence, develop friendships and support their mental health is just as important as reducing textile waste.

As a councillor for Petersfield, where we also receive many referrals through our NHS social prescribing partnerships, Kathryn understands just how valuable accessible, community-based support can be.

🧵 It was lovely to show Kathryn around Men’s Hems and introduce them to our Chair of Trustees Jane, our brilliant volunteers Danny and Paul, Ambassador Caroline, Programme Manager Ollie and CEO Melissa.

They got to see the wonderful range of projects everyone was working on, meet the people who make our sessions so special and hear first-hand about the difference Sew Positive makes to people’s lives.

🐾 And of course, no official visit would be complete without meeting Seve, our Chief Dog Officer! 🐶

We’re incredibly grateful to have local councillors who take the time to visit, listen, understand and champion grassroots organisations like ours.

Because at Sew Positive, we’re not just mending clothes. We’re building connections, confidence and stronger communities, one stitch at a time. 💗♻️

🧵 One stitch at a time, towards better mental health and connection 💚

17 participants joined us at today’s Sewcialise Good Mood Café, working with our wonderful tutor Reggie on all sorts of upcycling projects, from our ever-popular stash buckets and tissue box covers to a brilliant tote bag, all made using upcycled and scrap fabrics! ♻️

But as always, it’s about so much more than what we make.

💚 Two participants have started walking to the session together, helping each other find the motivation to come along.

“I didn’t really feel great this morning, but I knew if I could get there it would help, so I arranged to walk in with someone, and we are encouraging each other.”

That’s the power of connection and community!

🪡 Ambassador Lynn was experimenting with some fabulous decorative stitches on her stash bucket. Finding just the right machine settings wasn’t straightforward, but working through those little challenges, trying things out and finding solutions helps build resilience that reaches far beyond the sewing machine.

🚪 We also welcomed two brand-new participants, who registered on our new portal and stepped through our doors for the first time. We know that first step can feel enormous, but we’re here to help you find your feet, one stitch at a time.

And we even spotted CPSL Mind facilitator John having a go on a sewing machine! Now that’s our kind of collaboration! 🙌

A huge thank you to tutor Reggie and our brilliant volunteers Saba, Hilary B, Fiona and Jane for all your encouragement, patience and guidance today.

Upcycling fabrics, building confidence, making connections and supporting each other. That’s what Sewcialise is all about. 💚

First week back at South Cambs Sewcialise!

Amazing to see so many new faces and returning ones too. Our tutor Jemma taught English paper piecing! A wonderful session for everyone who braved the rain.

A very special post from Sew Positive 💛 PLEASE SHARE AND COMMENT YOUR SUPPORT.

Back in 2020, Melissa and her friend Jane Horwood had an idea to use their fabric stashes to make a few face masks and raise money for the NHS.

That “few masks” became 14,000 masks and £40,000 raised and ultimately led to the creation of Sew Positive, with Jane becoming one of our founding trustees.

Quite simply, Sew Positive wouldn’t exist without Jane.

Last month, following a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer, Jane made the difficult decision to close her much-loved business, Trash Chic Preloved Pop-up & Blog | Cambridge to focus on her health.

On Saturday 24 October, Jane’s friends, including Melissa, are coming together for a very special closing sale at Grand Arcade Cambridge.

And it feels especially fitting to be back there. Grand Arcade is where our mask sales began and where we met the wonderful Julie, pictured here, who has supported so many of Jane and Melissa’s ventures since, including bringing Trash Chic and Sew Positive together there again this May.

Jane says:

“Having had breast cancer two and a half years ago, at the end of August I found out it had moved into my spine, which was an incredible shock. I decided to close Trash Chic to focus on my health and wanted to sell my remaining stock for a good cause.”

Everything will be 50% off and everything must go, with all proceeds supporting cancer services through Addenbrooke’s Charity.

Expect one-of-a-kind vintage, preloved and upcycled clothes, from faux furs and sequin kimonos to slogan tees and camo trousers.

You can still run it with Team Running Stitch!

We have just TWO Sew Positive charity places left for the Cambridge Half Marathon.

💛 Minimum fundraising: £250

But most importantly, you’ll be part of our brilliant Sew Positive community, helping us tackle social isolation and poor mental health right here in Cambridge through sewing, creativity and connection.

And obviously, we’ll throw in Ollie, Melissa and our back up team enthusiastically supporting you from the sidelines, complete with homemade banners, signs and probably far too much cheering. 📣🪡😂

Fabulous start to our four week course with 13 new participants signed up to start their sewing journies, and to help improve social connection and wellbeing 🧵🙏🏻❤️👏🏻

In the capable tuition hands of Siobhan Salle de Couture: Sewing Courses and our volunteers this week were Jan, Andrea, Hilary and Saba!

We were really pleased to welcome Jo from Cambridge City Council, onCambridge City Councilg this course possible, and also emotional support dog, Ferdi, who was very relaxed and chilled in our hub! 🐾🐕

Everyone did so well today taking in lots of information, but it’s not just about getting it right first go, it’s about gaining confidence, having a go, getting to a new space and meeting new people….all of this counts as wins and we totally celebrate those 🧵👏🏻🎉
