To mark and to highlight some of the dedicated who make a difference in their community, we've asked a few of our volunteers to answer a few questions about their experiences with St John.
Sharon Hier is the Deputy Children and Young People Leader for our Pontarddulais Division, having first joined in 2007 as a helper with the local Badger Sett, with two of her daughters already members and the youngest joining soon after.
She, said: "I joined St John because I wanted to become actively involved in my community. I’ve always believed compassion, teamwork, and practical help can have an enormous impact on people’s lives. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to learn valuable skills, challenge myself, and become part of a supportive and caring organisation. I enjoy the sense of community and purpose volunteering with St John brings, and I value the friendships I’ve made.
"What I enjoy most is working with the Badgers. Whether it’s a child gaining confidence, learning first aid, making new friends or simply feeling included and encouraged, those moments are special. I love watching them develop teamwork, kindness, and resilience while having fun.
"Their enthusiasm and energy make every session enjoyable, and it’s good to know you’re helping shape the next generation to care for others and their community. Knowing I’m part of a safe, supportive environment where children can learn and thrive has been one of the most rewarding parts of volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru."
Sharon is one of those who will be recognised at our annual Investiture service at Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday, having been made a Member of the Order of St John earlier this year - with admissions and promotions approved by HM King Charles III. Congratulations! Llongyfarchiadau!
