We are pleased to be collaborating with our St John Ambulance counterparts in England on this Nationwide UK initiative, which will see lifesaving equipment installed at branches across Wales and our helping colleagues and communities learn the vital skills that could prove vital in an emergency.

Some great news to bring you as the end of draws near, demonstrating the impact of our Children and Young People programmes and the volunteers who lead them.

Menna and Bronwen, two of the youngest members of our St John Ambulance Cymru Carmarthen Division, were being looked after by their grandad recently when he had a small fall and cut his head. Luckily, the pair were prepared to help, having recently completed a First Aid Badger module.

Their parents Daniel Elias and Jemma Laurence, who both work in healthcare roles, are also St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers and have taught the children to ring them in the event of any problems and only ring 999 in emergencies.

Following the incident, Daniel said: “I cannot be prouder of them for what they have learnt in Badgers and how calm they both were in what must have been quite a stressful situation for such young people.

“We’re grateful for the fantastic work of the Badger Leaders, teaching our future generations first aid and how to deal with emergencies.”

Donna Jones, who leads the St John ambulance Cymru Badgers in Carmarthen, said: "We are so delighted to hear of their quick thinking and sensible, calm response in a real-life situation."

Da iawn Menna and Bronwen! Well done!

Did you know...? Last year our volunteers provided first aid cover at over 1,100 events across Wales, from community celebrations and endurance events to concerts and international sporting occasions. As well as those providing medical assistance to those attending these events, our are also involved in a range of support roles including planning and logistics behind the scenes. We are so grateful for all their efforts and the time they give to help others. Diolch o galon!

would be the ideal time to join us and start your own St John journey.

Here's what our Deputy Chief Commissioner Richard Baxter, who joined almost 25 years ago replied when asked what he'd say to people who were thinking of signing-up.

“It’s a family. I’ve made friends for life," says Richard Baxter, who has been volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru for almost 25 years.

Richard has reflected on his near quarter of a century of volunteering for a episode of our podcast 'Just in Case: Stories from St John', sharing some of his highlights, from helping to save lives and meeting the Dalai Lama to achieving individual awards along the way.

Richard was recently appointed one of the charity’s Deputy Chief Commissioners, having initially joined his local Radyr Division as a Cadet aged 12. Asked if he’d recommend joining St John Ambulance Cymru he said: “Absolutely. Just do it. Take the opportunity while it’s there. You’ll learn skills that could one day save someone’s life, maybe even a loved one. And you’ll become part of a wider family. That’s what St John has been for me.”

Hear more about Richard's experiences via the link in the comments. Diolch Richard! Thank you!

To mark and to highlight some of the dedicated who make a difference in their community, we've asked a few of our volunteers to answer a few questions about their experiences with St John.

Sharon Hier is the Deputy Children and Young People Leader for our Pontarddulais Division, having first joined in 2007 as a helper with the local Badger Sett, with two of her daughters already members and the youngest joining soon after.

She, said: "I joined St John because I wanted to become actively involved in my community. I’ve always believed compassion, teamwork, and practical help can have an enormous impact on people’s lives. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to learn valuable skills, challenge myself, and become part of a supportive and caring organisation. I enjoy the sense of community and purpose volunteering with St John brings, and I value the friendships I’ve made.

"What I enjoy most is working with the Badgers. Whether it’s a child gaining confidence, learning first aid, making new friends or simply feeling included and encouraged, those moments are special. I love watching them develop teamwork, kindness, and resilience while having fun.

"Their enthusiasm and energy make every session enjoyable, and it’s good to know you’re helping shape the next generation to care for others and their community. Knowing I’m part of a safe, supportive environment where children can learn and thrive has been one of the most rewarding parts of volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru."

Sharon is one of those who will be recognised at our annual Investiture service at Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday, having been made a Member of the Order of St John earlier this year - with admissions and promotions approved by HM King Charles III. Congratulations! Llongyfarchiadau!
