Today is Young Carers Action Day.
This is the story of someone who once was a young carer...
“As a child, I was a young carer, and I was supported by a charity very similar to For Every Child I Wish. That charity helped my mum buy clothes for us, school stationery, my bus pass, and my school uniform. I was also able to go on trips as a young carer, which gave me a kind of respite from everything I was carrying at such a young age.
Without that support, I honestly do not think I would have had the same education or opportunities that I did. Their help mattered so much. When you are a young carer, you are already so aware of how different your life feels from other children’s. You are carrying responsibilities that most children never have to think about, and at the same time, you are missing parts of childhood that other people take for granted.
I was very aware of what I was up against, and very aware of what I did not have. So when that charity stepped in and helped give me something more, it meant the world. It was not just practical support, although that mattered hugely. It was the feeling that someone saw me, cared about me, and wanted to make things a little lighter for me and my family.
That is why I think For Every Child I Wish is such an amazing charity. The work they do for children, and especially for young carers, is so important. On Young Carers Day, I really want to celebrate that and help raise awareness of just how life-changing this kind of support can be.
Please share and support the work of this amazing charity. It is only now, as an adult, that I can fully look back and understand just how important that support was for me and my family at the time. I was deeply grateful then, but now I can see even more clearly that the care, help, and investment shown to me as a child helped shape the woman I am today.
