The Tree Musketeers

The Tree Musketeers Local tree champions for Budleigh and beyond

We are a group of local volunteers with a passion for trees which, quite frankly, far exceeds any semblance of expertise, so we are on a journey to learn about trees, celebrate local trees, find out about YOUR favourite trees, embrace (maybe physically) a few trees AND most importantly to plant many, many more trees.

Help us plant for a shady future…

We are looking forward to taking part in the Gala Week, Climate Change event next Thursday evening

https://www.budleighlions.com/galaweek

One of the topics we very much expect to be part of the discussion is the need for more shade, as we experience higher temperatures.

As local Tree Champions we are encouraging local households and businesses to help us increase tree and hedge coverage, which in turn will provide more shade.

Come and join the discussion, and pick up your free sapling to do your bit.

Additional saplings will be available in return for a donation, helping us with our ongoing growing and planting plans.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook if you’re not already, to keep up to date with our work.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.

We have 12 beautiful dog roses to give away as part of our pollinator friendly tree and hedge selection at Thursday’s Environment Evening in Budleigh Salterton. The flowers are loved by early pollinators and the later rose hips enjoyed by birds and mammals. These beauties can be trained along fences, will scramble up a tree or through a hedge. On a first come, first served basis. Thank you for sponsoring Budleigh Salterton Lions Club Plastic Free Budleigh Salterton Otter Valley Association.

Do you have a border for a Blackthorn?

We have over 150 saplings, all grown to attract pollinators, ready to find a treasured place in local gardens. So our question for you is:

- Do you have a border for a Blackthorn?
- Or a hedge for a Hazel?
- Perhaps, you have the perfect place for a P***y Willow?
- Or a cosy corner for a Crab Apple?

To collect your complimentary sapling, come and meet us, and take part in the discussion on Thursday 28 May, 6.30pm at the Public Hall where we will be one of the local groups at the ‘Adapting for a Changing Future’ Gala Week event. https://www.lovebudleigh.co.uk/news/budleigh-salterton-lions-club-gala-week-2026

What is a snag?

If you’ve walked down Granary Lane in the last year, you’ve probably seen one but may not have realised what it is!

A snag is a tree in the final stages of its life. It can be a dead standing tree or a dying tree. The tree’s life might be at an end, but its usefulness to wildlife is about to peak:

Dead wood provides specialist homes for insects as well as fungi.
Those insects are a food source for birds, bats and other small mammals.
These creatures take advantage of hollows or holes in the tree for shelter.
In turn, these smaller residents are food for larger mammals and birds of prey.
Dead and decaying trees are a vital part of a wood’s biodiversity. That’s why we leave plenty on our sites. Removing dead wood from woodland removes an important part of its biodiversity.

Can you help us plant more trees?

We’re looking for local homes, or businesses, with space to plant one or more young trees.

This is part of our work to encourage the planting of sustainable tree cover in Budleigh and beyond.

Over the last few months, we’ve been busy nurturing over 150 saplings, all grown to attract pollinators, and they are now ready to find new homes.

Come and meet us on Thursday 28 May, 6.30pm at the Public Hall where we will be taking part in the ‘Adapting for a Changing Future’ Gala Week event.

Come and find out more, join the discussion and take a complimentary sapling home at the end of the evening.
