Return to Rescue
What does that mean? It means most, if not all, rescues promise to take back a dog if an adopter asks them to. It’s a way of keeping the dog safely in rescue, ‘under your wing’, avoiding the ‘free to a good home’ adverts or worse and it is there when life throws an adopter a curved ball and they can no longer keep their dog. But it gives adopters a sense of it’s ok -if it doesn’t work out, we can just give the dog back.
Sadly, it sometimes also means ‘giving up’ on a dog that has just arrived, a dog carefully placed with an adopter who convinced us they were the right person for this particular dog; a dog who now has to move again. It means that a rehome coordinator can feel like they’ve failed ( and sometimes we do get it wrong- we’re only human) We dread return to rescue… and it’s often avoidable-all we ask is that you follow our advice and you give the dog time: 3 days to get over the stress of being moved from everyone and everything they’ve ever known and then 3 weeks to begin to feel and behave like themselves again.
We know that for an adopter it can feel like you have not got the dog you were expecting. So often we hear ‘This is not the dog that you described to us, they must have not told you the truth about the dog, its clearly got issues we were not told about’ But how about thinking that the previous owners described the dog how it was with them, at home with people he/she knew and trusted, and it will be the same dog again, in the new home, it just needs a lot of time, understanding and patience. We are always on hand to support too and if we really have placed a dog in the wrong home we will make things right for the dog. Their wellbeing is always our priority
Please don’t apply to adopt a rescue from us or anywhere else unless you are in it for the long run, for that dog’s ‘forever’ and you are prepared to clear your schedule for the next three weeks or however long it takes. Unless you are sure you can meet the challenges your rehome coordinator will have discussed with you.
Thanks to all the amazing adopters who have succeeded- you are all awesome!
