ABC Book Club ABC ensures schools and children have unlimited access to free, quality books 📖 📚

In cases where there is no library, ABC has created reading spaces within schools to encourage a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

Who says a school library has to be four uninspiring walls and rows of bookcases full of books often past their best?

At ABC, we like to think big, get creative, and do things a little differently.

We like to create cosy hideaways with fairy lights, cushions to sink into, and shelves packed with excellent quality preloved books waiting to be discovered. Every reading room is different, but they all have one thing in common: they’re designed to make children feel welcome, spark their curiosity, and get them excited about reading.

Because it’s not just about creating a beautiful space. It’s about giving every child somewhere they want to spend time, to explore, share stories, and find their next favourite book.

Our ambition? To inspire the reader in every child.

Thank you to the staff and pupils at Goodrich Primary in Dulwich for helping us bring this project to life and to Sir Michael and Lady Clare Morpugo for so generously giving their time to come and officially open the new reading room.

What followed was a rather spectacular reaction.

The countdown, the shrieks of excitement, the “OH WOW!”s, “this is awesome!”s and small mouths covered in shock. Then the very important verdict: “It’s so beautiful.”

While outside, some of the adults were already reaching for the tissues!

This is exactly why we believe the environment matters.

A library shouldn’t just be somewhere books are stored. It should be somewhere children want to be - a place that sparks curiosity, imagination and excitement about what’s waiting on the shelves but that also offers a sanctuary - a calming space.

We want children to walk through the door and think: I want to spend time in here, I want to lie on a rug and read.

If the reaction to their new Woodland Reading Room is anything to go by, Goodrich Primary’s children are going to be doing plenty of all three.

Did you guess correctly?

Our new Woodland Reading Room at Goodrich Primary in Dulwich was opened last week by Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare.

The Morpurgos have a special relationship with the school, as Goodrich were the first to visit Nethercott House — the first of three farms they set up as part of their ‘Farms for City Children’ project.

Plus there is another lovely connection to reading. Clare’s father, Allen Lane, founded Penguin Books and pioneered the modern paperback, so books and reading have been part of Clare’s family story too.

It’s this shared belief in the importance of giving children experiences, opportunities and environments that can broaden their horizons that makes Michael and Clare such a perfect fit for ABC.

We believe a library should be much more than a room full of books. It should be a place where children can discover new worlds, develop a love of reading, use their imaginations and simply enjoy being around books.

So having two people who have dedicated so much of their lives to giving children new experiences and nurturing their curiosity there to open one of our reading rooms was incredibly special.

Thank you, Michael and Clare, for being part of such a special day — and for bringing your own love of stories, imagination and adventure to ABC.

We’re incredibly grateful.

Thank you to Emma Lester - English Lead at Wincheap Primary in Canterbury, for this wonderful feedback. The children made their feelings very clear at the launch, but it’s always a bonus when the adults are happy too.

Emma told us how the whole school reacted to their new Rainforest Reading Room — and how privileged they felt to have worked with ABC.

Knowing that children will be using this space, enjoying it, and discovering books in it for years to come is what really matters to us.

You don’t need statistics to see what a new school library means to children. But the numbers help us understand just how significant those moments really are.

Did you know that 1 in 7 state primary schools in the UK doesn’t have a library or dedicated reading space?

In the most disadvantaged areas, that rises to 1 in 4.

And that 1 in 5 children don’t own a single book at home?

For some children, their school library can be their only opportunity to discover books, find stories they love and develop a relationship with reading. Research shows that early reading builds a strong foundation for lifelong cognitive, academic and mental wellbeing and improves outcomes.

This is why ABC exists.

We create inspirational, colourful and welcoming reading rooms where children can browse, relax, discover books and enjoy reading for pleasure. We want to reach all children, not just those who already love reading.

When you see children reacting like this to a library, you start to understand just how much a space like this can mean.

The long-term impact is crucial, but before a child becomes a reader, they have to want to pick up a book and that starts with creating inspirational spaces to encourage them to do so.

Can you see the hidden details in our new reading room?

When we started working with Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, they asked us if we could incorporate their favorite inspirational reading quotes into their project. As every ABC library is designed around the school, the children and the space they have, we were more than happy to oblige.

Even more so when we saw the quotes they wanted to use - words carefully chosen to encourage children, especially the more reluctant readers, to find joy in books.

“Take your time – great readers grow one page at a time.”

“Reading is dreaming with open eyes.”

“Kind hearts, curious minds, endless stories.”

“Where imaginations climb high.”

Because when we create each reading room, we are not just thinking about where to put the books, we are considering how we can make that space feel inclusive and welcoming for everyone and how to make children feel inspired to read for pleasure.

Our first library launch of the new 2026/27 school year...and what a way to start!

The children at Good Shepherd RC Primary school in Downham had voted for a Rainforest theme for their new reading room, and we have been working away all summer to deliver it to them on their first day back.

And then the screens came down.

What had been, at the end of last term, a plain, uninspiring room with books piled up and nowhere to properly browse or sit, became a fully transformed reading space with trees, cosy reading spots and shelves packed with great quality pre-loved books.

And, judging by their reaction, we think they approved 😊

Thank you to the team at Good Shepherd for making this happen and working with us to make the children’s first day of term so special.

Do you remember...Earlier this year we ran a competition for a school to win an ABC book corner makeover complete with bookcases, a rug and lots of donated books?

The parent who won nominated Highfield Infants School in Bromley to receive the prize and when they saw the work that what we do, they decided to add some of their own funding to upgrade to a reading room.

Consequently we were able to build a colourful, inspirational reading space for the children to enjoy where they can relax, explore the shelves and read for pleasure.

A huge thank you to the school for investing in their space and helping us create something even more special.

It’s a new school year - and at ABC we’re choosing to celebrate.

Because we don’t want the end of the summer holidays to mean back-to-school blues.

We want children to walk through the school gates and have places where they can feel comfortable, curious, creative and happy. Places where they can curl up with a book, get lost in a story, laugh with their friends or simply switch off for a while.

That’s why we build reading rooms. Not just rooms full of books, but spaces that children actually want to spend time in.

So here’s to a new school year full of stories, imagination, laughter and lots of happy reading.
