CASE STUDY | Challenging a Universal Credit decision 💙

When this client came to Citizens Advice Bromley, they were struggling with their mental health and a complex Universal Credit dispute during an incredibly difficult period.

Our team supported the client in challenging benefit decisions, correcting errors in their Universal Credit claim, and ensuring they received the support they were entitled to.

As a result, the client's debt was cleared, their benefits were backdated correctly, and they were able to focus on rebuilding their life.

We're seeing more people come to Citizens Advice Bromley after being told they owe thousands of pounds in Universal Credit overpayments—often years after the payments were made.

Many clients tell us they:
✅ Reported changes correctly
✅ Followed advice from Universal Credit
✅ Believed they were receiving the right amount

Yet they later receive unexpected repayment demands.

We believe the system must be fairer, clearer and more transparent.
