Bromley Mencap

Bromley Mencap Independent and self-funded, we work alongside people with learning & physical disabilities We are based in the London Borough of Bromley.

Bromley Mencap is an independent registered charity working with and on behalf of disabled people, their families and carers. We were set up as a learning disability organisation in 1951 by a group of parents with children who had learning disabilities. We started to campaign at local level and later began to provide services. In 2010 we joined together with Bromley Scope and changed our Objects t

o become a disability organisation providing services for people with learning and/or physical disabilities. We now run a wide range of services for disabled people of all ages, carers and families. We also campaign and provide support around representation to ensure the views of disabled people are heard and taken on board. We are a member-led organisation and have over 1,500 members. We operate from 2 offices in central Bromley. Bromley Mencap’s continuous action on behalf of disabled people in the Borough, and on behalf of their parents and carers, is based on the principle that disabled people have a need and right to live like others in the community, and to have a reasonable quality of life. Our aims are:

1.To provide or assist in the provision of services, support and information to people with disabilities, their families, dependants and carers leading to independent living opportunities and improved life chances
2.To challenge discrimination through campaigning and lobbying and user representation
3.To be a member and user led organisation
To fulfil these aims, we employ a Chief Executive and a team of staff who are supported by a loyal group of volunteers. We have a number of sub-committees and are governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2011 we celebrate our 60th Diamond Jubilee anniversary.

Take part in our walking challenges this July. Whether you raise £5, £50, £75 or simply help spread the word, thank you for supporting Bromley Mencap in our 75th anniversary year.

You can take part in 75 in Action, our flexible challenge where you choose your own activity and move your way throughout July. Walk, wheel, run, skip, swim, cycle or choose a challenge that works for you.

We suggest a fundraising target of £75, but every contribution makes a difference.

You can also join Bridging 75 Years, our relaxed guided London walk to mark 75 years of Bromley Mencap. Entry is £5, with a suggested fundraising target of £50.

Money raised will help support Family Futures, our children and families’ wellbeing service, supporting families with disabled and neurodivergent children.

Are you aged 18–24, have an EHCP and want to build a career in healthcare?

Project SEARCH is a full-time, one-year supported internship programme based within NHS hospitals, with three real work placements to help interns build confidence, independence and employability skills.

The programme is delivered in partnership with London South East Colleges, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Bromley Council, ISS, DFN Project SEARCH and Bromley Mencap.

Bromley Mencap job coaches support interns throughout the programme, helping them learn workplace routines, develop skills and prepare for paid employment.

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers! We really couldn't run our services without you.

This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a huge thank you to the incredible people who give their time, skills and compassion to support Bromley Well services across the borough.

Over the past year, around 150 volunteers have contributed more than 29,000 hours — the equivalent of around 18 full-time staff — helping us reach thousands of residents who need support with their health, wellbeing and independence.

Their impact is felt right across our borough:
# Answering calls in our Contact Centre from residents seeking support
# Helping residents access essential advice and support - benefits, housing and cost of living challenges
# Making sure people don’t feel alone
# Improving wellbeing and quality of life for thousands.

Volunteering doesn’t just benefit the community — it brings huge value to the individual too.

# Build confidence and develop new skills
# Gain valuable experience for the workplace
# Be part of a supportive team
# Make a meaningful difference in their local community.

It’s no surprise that some of our volunteers go on to paid employment, taking with them the skills, experience and confidence they’ve developed along the way.

Thank you to all our incredible volunteers 🙏
