Full Disclosure - my wife is a local Coastguard Rescue Officer.
Imagine someone rings and asks for the Coastguard. The operator takes the details, but says that it may be some hours before anyone can respond.
After a court ruling in January changed the Status of Coastguard Rescue Officers from voluntary to Workers, got notification that in September the Maritime Coastguard Agency are going to return our status to 100% voluntary. Coastguard Rescue Officers have received remuneration for call outs for many years to offset disruption to life and loss of earnings in order to respond. Moving to a voluntary status will probably affect retention and number of the teams around the UK, and also their skills and therefore the ability of teams to safety and effectively respond and carry out rescues.
Please sign the petition raised by the Eastbourne Coastguard Team. It is of national significance, not just local.

Strand Art Gallery may be closing down. but has a fascinating and largely unknown history. Since 1956 it was serving Brixham’s “Slipway Artists”, licensed by the harbourmaster to paint and sell on the Slipway, to the delight of a global audience. Brixham Museum now has an exhibition tribute showcase to these same artists and their paintings, on display at the Museum (Free entry).
Strand Art Gallery founded in 1971 by Bill Stockman, and run by Bill for 28 years. Followed by his son, Andrew Stockman, who took the helm in 1998, who ran it also for a further 28 years. Family total 56 years. In the meantime, the colony of artists produced thousands of paintings, of many subjects: seascapes, lifeboats, trawlers, galleons, Brixham, Dartmoor, Devon coastline, and big naval battle scenes. Over the years the artists were often filmed for TV. Andrew & Tina will miss all the exciting creativity, it was such a wonderful time spanning decades, a colony of wonderful artists, but retirement beckons for Andrew and Tina, and time to hopefully enjoy a glorious Devon summer themselves!!
