Sustainable Fashion Week 2026 is here!
So, what does sustainable fashion mean to you?
It could be buying fewer, better quality items, buying secondhand or from smaller, local designers and makers, or swapping and handing down among your friends and family.
It could be making more of what you already have through repairing, repurposing, upcycling or styling things differently.
It could be campaigning for garment workers' rights, or supporting organisations that do this work. Or raising awareness about the obscene inequality in fashion supply chains - with big brands making huge profits while workers don't earn enough money to live on.
Or something else.
For me it's a mixture of all the above. I want to do everything I can to slow fashion down, resisting the temptation of fast fashion to show big brands that we don't need the billions of new, mainly polyester garments they produce every year (only for a similar amount to be incinerated or end up in landfill), thank you very much.
And that's what's at the heart of our activities for this year's Sustainable Fashion Week.
Tomorrow's BS3 Slow Fashion Fest centres around the idea that the most sustainable items of clothing are the ones you already own, offering lots of activities to help you to hang on to what you already love by giving it a new lease of life.
Our Screening: Woman Grows Jeans event on Tuesday will take a hopeful look at how wholesome the textile and garment making industry could be, as Justine grows, dyes, weaves and stitches a pair of jeans from scratch in the UK. After the screening, we'll chat fast fashion, garment workers' rights, and the importance of creativity with Labour Behind the Label's Anna Bryher.
Last, but not least, with Thursday evening's Fix Club Special: Fix Club Special: Mending Marathon we want to bring together our community to see we can achieve together. We're aiming to make 100 repairs in 3 hours... (but whatever we manage will be great!) Can you help?? All levels welcome - there will be guidance on hand from four wonderful, experienced repairers (Ronnie, Suzanne, Shika and Sophie), a sewing machine or two, moral support, tools, materials and some excellent veggie and vegan snacks from local caterers Kate's Kitchen to keep us going (this is probably the part I'm most excited about).
