🗞️ New Greenprint alert - ‘Back to Business’ Special Edition!

Busy first week back after the summer break?

You won't be the only one catching up, and the climate and sustainability agenda didn't pause over the summer - quite the opposite - so we’ve put together this special ‘Back to Business’ edition of The Greenprint covering the major developments from the last few months, as well as a look at some of those coming up on the Q4 horizon, in the sustainability space:

- Big news in just this week as summer 2026 is confirmed to be the UK's hottest on record, with Europe's own heat, drought and wildfires estimated to have cost EU economies up to €180bn.

- SBTi published its Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 - reshaping how targets are set, validated and delivered. Any business holding (or pursuing) science-based targets should expect to reassess, and likely re-baseline, against it.

- The UK wrote its 2040 target - an 87% cut - into law via the Seventh Carbon Budget, fixing the decarbonisation trajectory in statute and, with it, the regulatory, procurement and disclosure expectations businesses will plan against in the next decade.

- The clean energy transition continues unabated, even in the face of global macro shocks, with a record $2.2tn of global investment coming in this year - nearly double that of fossil fuels.

The throughline: this summer, the cost of inaction and the infrastructure of the energy transition - standards, targets, markets - all matured in lockstep with the visible consequences of the climate emergency on our daily lives and economies becoming ever more apparent. With COP31 coming up in November, and with the voluntary carbon market rapidly maturing, the pace of change is only accelerating - Q4 is therefore an opportunity for those organisations that move first to show leadership, and set the pace for everyone else.

Locking in carbon credits years ahead is more cost effective, here's why. 💰

For nature-based projects, publicly disclosed offtake data already shows it: lock in early and you're paying below current spot rates, even as those spot prices are projected to rise. 📈

The supply picture makes it sharper still - removal credits are already becoming harder to access on the spot market, and that constraint tightens as more companies approach their net zero dates.

There are three purchasing models: spot, forward and offtake, sitting on a spectrum from maximum flexibility to maximum commitment. Most companies start spot-heavy. The risk is staying there too long.

Our guide covers when to introduce forward contracts, where offtakes make sense, and the four factors that should drive the decision.
- How spot, forward and offtake compare on cost, risk and commitment
- The four things that should drive the decision: price, risk appetite, how much you'll lean on removals, and where you're heading
- The common mistakes, from staying spot-only too long to underestimating delivery risk on future contracts

Business resilience is on the agenda when COP31 kicks off in Antalya on 9 November. ⚠️

It's being framed as a "COP of implementation", focused on turning existing climate commitments into action rather than new pledges.

For businesses, that shift matters. Our latest blog, from Sam Jackson, our Director of Climate Science and Impact, breaks down what it will mean in practice. He'll be on the ground in Antalya for the first week, so expect more updates straight from the summit itself.

Three priorities stand out: accelerating the clean energy transition, mobilising climate finance and investment, and building resilience.

The stakes are already showing up in the numbers. Our Climate Commitments Report 2026 found that 84% of UK businesses are experiencing climate-related impacts, and 70% of those have seen turnover losses of more than 1% of annual revenue.

At the same time, 83% of businesses say measurable progress towards net-zero protects future revenue and resilience, a strong signal that climate action and commercial performance are now closely linked.

The blog also sets out practical ways to prepare, from measuring emissions and setting credible targets to building resilience and identifying commercial opportunities, all mapped to our 3Rs Framework of Reduce, Restore, Report.

Nature restoration funding doesn't need its own budget line, it can be part of what you’re already spending on media. 🌱💰

That's the idea behind Media in Service of Nature, as Alex d'Albertanson, Media Sustainability Project Director at Ad Net Zero, explains in this clip.

By committing at least 0.1% of media spend to UK nature restoration, brands can make an outsized impact, without a new pledge or a separate ESG budget.

For Alex, that simplicity matters just as much as the impact. It's an easy mechanism to put in place, and it lets brands tell a genuine story that supports their own climate goals.

Your business depends on nature more than you might think, and resilience starts there. 🌱

83% of UK businesses see net-zero action as essential to future revenue and resilience. Yet only 58% of UK business leaders acknowledge how dependent their operations are on nature. 📊

Turning that awareness into action looks different for each business: 28% are embedding nature-based interventions across their operations, 23% are buying verified carbon credits to cover ongoing emissions, and 22% are dedicating profit or revenue to nature.

Nature isn't a side project. It's becoming core to how resilient businesses plan for the future.

Learn more in our Climate Commitments Report 2026, published with BusinessGreen, based on insights from 1,600 UK business leaders across 28 sectors.

Climate change comes with a price tag, and most UK businesses have already felt it. ⚠️

Sam Jackson, Ecologi's Director of Climate Science and Impact, unpacks the numbers behind our 2026 Climate Commitments Report.

84% of UK business leaders can point to at least one climate-related hit to their finances in the past two years, and 70% of those say it cost 1% or more of annual turnover. 💸

Four in ten of those impacted businesses saw costs top 6% of turnover in a single year, comparable to the Bank of England's estimate that Brexit's net effect on the UK economy over the past decade was around 6% of GDP. 🇬🇧📉

The top impacts businesses cited were increased energy and resource costs, higher raw material costs, and supply chain disruption.

Every pound spent on a campaign has a choice to make, build resilience or lock in vulnerability. ⚖️

That's the thinking behind Media in Service of Nature, and in this clip, Steve Dickenson, Commercial Director at Ecologi, breaks down why the industry can't afford to get that choice wrong. 💰

So far, the movement has helped plant 19,969 UK native trees and restore 13,951.6 square meters of habitat. But this is only the beginning. 🌱

*office stationery cupboard opens. Boggart emerges, takes the shape of an endless algorithmic doomscroll designed to convince you that everything is rubbish and there is no hope in the world and…*

“RIDDIKULUS!”

*Boggart turns into this week's Ecologi Good News. Everyone laughs. Boggart retreats to the shadows*

To assist you with your visualisation exercises this week, consider the following:

∙ Endangered sea turtle ‘Rhossi’ completing rehab in Texas after a wild Welsh diversion

∙ Exceptionally cute/rare babirusa piglet born at Chester Zoo in boost to species

∙ Ospreys breed on an English RSPB reserve for the first time since the Victorian era

∙ Colombia moves to shield the Amazon with ban on all new oil and mining projects

∙ Royal Mail passes 9,000 electric vans, with a third of its routes now zero-emission

Laughter's the only thing that ever saw off a Boggart - so tell us in the comments which story you found the most charming, or consult the rest of the spellbook over on our blog: https://hubs.la/Q04vpxfR0

Taking climate action doesn't just protect your business from future costs, it can actively grow your business too. 🌱

Businesses report an average uplift of 15.5% in brand image and recognition, an average uplift of 14.6% in attracting eco-conscious customers, and an average uplift of 14.4% in revenue. 💰⬆️

Many also point to a sharper competitive edge and lower costs.

These are the findings from our 2026 Climate Commitments Report, where Sam Jackson, Ecologi's Director of Climate Science and Impact, explores this shift from risk to reward.
