It was wonderful to see so many of you at Forwards Bristol in the information tent and workshops this year. We are so grateful to everyone who came to speak to us, whether it was to find out more about the campaign, sign our manifesto or learn about their rights as private renters. The sheer number of you who had a story to tell is a testament to how bad the renting situation in Bristol has gotten.
Thank you to everyone who attended our workshops and share their ideas about how they want to see renting in Bristol change. These are the first of workshops we’ll be doing across the city to hear from our community about what would make the biggest impact to them.
Keep an eye out for our next events if you’d like to attend one of our workshops or share your thoughts or renter story in the comments.

Bristol renters, who's going to Forwards?!
This year we'll be at our stall until 6pm and running a workshop from 6:30 to 7:25pm on Saturday and Sunday, where we want to hear from YOU about how you want to see renting in Bristol change.
We hope to see you there!

Andy Burnham - where are the rent controls?

Andy Burnham has been a long-term supporter of rent controls, dating from when he was Mayor of Greater Manchester.

In 2023, he wrote to then Housing Secretary Michael Gove along with other Mayors calling for powers to control private rents.

Now, he has not ruled out introducing rent controls to tackle the high cost of living, but also not committed to a plan to address unaffordable rents.

With the average Bristol renter sending 45% of their income each year to their landlord, we need the new Prime Minister to take urgent action.

We need Andy Burnham’s government to introduce an indefinite rent freeze immediately and then work with renters to bring in a longer-term system of rent controls in the future.

You cannot tackle the cost of living without tackling the sky-high private rents that are pushing renters into poverty just to have a roof over their head.

We want a better future where all renters can have a safe, secure and affordable home. Join the Bristol Fair Renting Campaign & help us fight for rent controls.

Do you think Andy Burnham’s government will implement a rent freeze? Let us know and tag Andy Burnham in the comments!

Bristol’s JSNA Health and Wellbeing profile for 2026/27 found that 25.6% of children in Bristol are living in poverty after housing costs have been covered. In specific areas of Bristol this number rises to 57.7%. The cost of private rent is unsustainable and the fact it’s pushing families into relative poverty is unacceptable.

At Bristol Fair Renting Campaign we are fighting to make the laws and regulations that determine the cost of renting fair. Read the links in our bio to learn more about what we do and be sure to follow us to see what we're up to tomorrow.

The average renter in Bristol gives 45% of their income to their landlord.
At 45%, Bristol has the highest average rent-to-income ratio in the UK, even beating out London at 43%. This makes Bristol the least affordable city in all of England.

At the Bristol Fair Renting Campaign, we think this is unacceptable and we’re taking action.

Read the links in our bio to learn more about what we do and be sure to follow us as there’s lots happening over the next few days!

A big thank you to the residents of Bristol who came together to help us build our beautiful banner, that rentees proudly marched with at the National Housing Demonstration in London in April. It was great to see so many people sharing their renting stories and lending their talents to create a beautiful, finished product that we can reuse countless times.
At the moment, it’s easy to feel discouraged by the division and hate we are currently seeing in the UK, but our community has shown us there is hope if you look for it. Alone, our voices can feel unheard, but the support for the demonstration showed together we are impossible to ignore. United, we’ll continue calling for rent controls and a renting system that works for everyone.
