💬 Let’s Talk About Youth

Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome Bristol youth workers Phav and Sharmir, alongside their tutor John Wheatley from City of Bristol College, for a really valuable conversation about youth work across Bristol.

Together, we talked about the challenges young people are facing, what good youth support looks like, and what more could be happening in communities like Frome Vale.

One thing that came through strongly from our community conversations - including some of the wishes shared on our Christmas tree last year - was that local people would love to see more activities, opportunities and support for young people in the area.

Listening to young people and those working directly with them is such an important part of shaping what happens next, and it was great to hear so many thoughtful ideas and experiences shared around the table.

A big thank you to Phav, Sharmir and John for coming along and contributing to the conversation. 💜

If you’d like to chat about youth activities, ideas or opportunities in Frome Vale, feel free to speak to the Hub team or contact Charity at [email protected]

“Hope grows when people come together with a shared belief that we can build something better together. In a time when division can often dominate the headlines, last Friday's event showed the very best of Bristol: kindness, creativity, connection and community spirit in action. It was a powerful reminder of the strength, warmth and generosity that exists across our beautiful city.” Julian Mines

It was a privilege for Bristol Charities to help co-design Hope Café at The Vassall Centre with our friends at Strike Communications Ltd alongside HOPE not hate as part of A Million Acts of Hope week.

Seeing more than 100 people - volunteers, residents, charities, faith groups and civic leaders - come together with such positivity and purpose was genuinely uplifting.

West of England mayor Helen Godwin Mayor of the West of England lauded the region’s “community spirit” and shared values of “tolerance, inclusion and compassion”

She said: “Today’s event in Fishponds was a timely reminder of the power of kindness and social connection here in the West Country.

“I am proud of the special community spirit that runs throughout our region – which is home to acts of hope every day – and of our shared values of tolerance, inclusion and compassion.”

Bristol Central MP Carla Denyer MP also sent best wishes for the event highlighting a city that “refuses to give in to hostility and division”.
She added: “Bristol is a city which refuses to give in to hostility and division.

“Events like Friday’s ‘Hope Cafe’ showcase the best of our city: united in our desire to look out for each other and to create a kinder world. I am very pleased to support this local event as part of A Million Acts of Hope.”

Huge thanks to everyone who contributed and shared messages of support, including Props Bristol, St George's Bristol Samir Savant Zoe Williams Sophie Jerrold and the many brilliant artists and volunteers who helped create such a welcoming and joyful space. 💜

Bristol showed up for hope today 💙

Civic, charity and faith leaders and local community members gathered at the Vassall Community Hub this morning for Hope Café - a celebration of the acts of hope and community spirit that make our region what it is.

Part of , the morning featured a performance from Sing for Happiness Choir, a pop-up café from the brilliant team at .org, and a few hopeful pebbles painted along the way.

Thank you to everyone who made it such a special morning 🧡

Today the Bristol Charities team wore green to mark Mental Health Awareness Week and support Wear It Green Day 💚

It was a chance not only to show support, but also to remind ourselves that looking after mental health means taking action - checking in with one another, making time to talk, and creating spaces where people feel supported and connected.

We also handed out little green candles for staff to take home and light this evening - as modelled beautifully by our queen of happiness and hope, receptionist Michelle ✨

Our CEO, Julian Mines, also visited the Watershed this week for a meeting with leaders from across the city to discuss how we can work collectively against hate, and towards hope and action.

Because change doesn’t happen through words alone - it happens through people taking action together. A million acts of hope start with one.

🌿 What’s Been Good?

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re sharing a powerful guest blog from Helen at Brainworks Hypnotherapy, who runs free Monday morning relaxation sessions at the Vassall Community Hub.

Over the past year, a small mindfulness group has grown into a steady, supportive space where people can take a moment to pause, reflect, and connect. Each session begins with a simple question - “What’s been good?” - helping people notice small positives, even during difficult weeks.

In her blog, Helen reflects on how the group has developed, and shares honest feedback from those who attend - from managing anxiety to finding a sense of community.
