🧵 Make Friends with Your Sewing Machine is back! 🧵

Our brilliant volunteer Jane is running another series of her free, small-group sewing sessions at the Vassall Community Hub.

Perfect if you have a sewing machine but aren’t quite sure where to start, these friendly sessions will help you get comfortable with the basics - from setting up and threading your machine to tension, tips and tricks. You’ll also make a simple pocket tissue cover to take home.

🪡 All materials are provided for free. Please bring your own sewing machine if you can - if not, just let Jane know.

🧘 Dhamma Talk and Guided Meditation at the Vassall Centre
The Isipathana Meditation Centre is hosting a free Dhamma talk and guided meditation at the Vassall Centre.
The session will feature a special English Dhamma talk from the world-renowned Venerable Mahindasiri Thero, to promote inner peace.

🍂 This week at Lunch Club, we marked the start of autumn by drawing autumn leaves onto fabric patches and sharing words we associate with the season.

‘Warmth’, ‘cuddles’, ‘hot water bottles’, ‘change’ and ‘mellow fruitfulness’ were just some of the things that came to mind!

We snacked on a lovely gift of Indian sweets, chatted about our favourite trees and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon getting creative. Lots of people commented on how calming they found it. 💜

🧵 Do you enjoy sewing? We’d love to stitch the finished patches together to create a mini tapestry to display in the Hub. If you could help us put it together, we’d love to hear from you!

💜 Tai Chi update
After having to cancel a few recent sessions due to her health, we're sending Antoinette our very best wishes while she focuses on her treatment and recovery.

We're pleased that Judith will be stepping in to run Tai Chi on:

Antoinette is hoping to arrange cover for some of the other sessions during October and November, and we'll share any additional dates once they're confirmed.

She is anticipating being able to return to her regular Tai Chi sessions from December.

💜 “My dad used to come here.”

When 11-year-old Owen needed to choose somewhere to volunteer while working towards his Scout badges, he picked Oldbury Court Food Club.

But there was a reason for his choice.

A few years ago, his dad Lee started coming to the Food Club after ill health forced him to stop working.

“At the time, it was a godsend,” Lee says. “It just lifted a weight of burden about worrying about how the next week was going to be funded.”

Now, a lot has changed for their family - and this time, Owen and Lee came through the doors to help.

We spoke to them about Lee’s journey back into work, why Owen chose to return to the Food Club and what he discovered when he got behind the scenes for the first time.

The Bright Green Homes team will be joining us at Soup & Social next Thursday to talk about funding available to eligible households for home energy improvements.

Depending on your home and circumstances, support could include loft or cavity wall insulation, solar panels and battery storage, new windows and doors, air source heat pumps and ventilation upgrades.
