To close out our week of recognising and celebrating A Million Acts of Hope, we want to take the time to highlight the work of just a few of our supporters.
Their support gives us hope.

RWoB is a trauma informed charity, and so we choose not to share any photos of our members publicly. In order to help share the work of RWoB we have been lucky enough to have the support of Kate White Media who produced our wonderful audio piece for International Women’s Day 2025. You can find our audio here: https://www.refugeewomenofbristol.org.uk/our-impact/

Following this, members of our team (with guidance from and funding from ) created our ‘About us’ video for International Women’s Day 2026 which you can find on our Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram accounts - https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7454898838626193409
...and for many years we have also had the support of talented local artist, who somehow manages to capture the movement, colour, celebration and hope during our annual dance events.

These invaluable resources aim to highlight our work and amplify the voices of the community we support. Without the kindness and support of these people and many others we would struggle to successfully share the voices of our members. These acts of kindness give RWoB and our members hope.
Thank you to everyone who gives their time, skills and compassion to supporting RWoB.

Thank you for contributing towards A Million Acts of Hope.

Food: Our One Language

Food speaks where words fall short.
It carries hope, connection, the taste of childhood.

When we gather to share it, we speak one language:

Hope.
We remember as one:
a memory of Hope.

We laugh as one:
a laugh of Hope.

In this meal, we hold:
Hope for respect.
Hope for love.
Hope for community.
Hope for home.
Hope for each other.

Here, we are sisters.
Forever.

River of Hope

Life began with water.
In conflict, water became everything , the thread that keeps us alive.

Our river flows with Hope.
It carries a Hope greater than our struggle.

At the RWoB Welcome Centre, we built this River of Hope.
It holds our journey here , every step marked by Hope.

Every day we receive Hope.
Every day we give Hope to our friends, our family, ourselves.

Together, we keep this river moving.
Together, we float.

It's Monday, and we have another post as part of our contribution to the Million Acts of Hope campaign.

Today we share a short video/audio piece created by a member of our team, with a voice over from Kaltun who is reading one of her own poems entitled 'Sisterhood'.

Enjoy.

Our next reflection on a Million Acts of Hope comes from Jade, one of our team of Community Workers at our Welcome Centre.
Jade and the other Community Workers offer multilingual support to new and existing members. They provide initial information and support for our new members and ongoing support to existing members. They encourage and support women to join the different activities at the centre and provide interpretation and written translation support if needed.

Yesterday we thanked our volunteers and Trustees for their continued support and Acts of Hope within our RWoB community. Today, we want to extend that thanks to our staff.

Our team work so hard, often going above and beyond their roles to support and care for our members. Many of the team have Lived Experience and so are truly the best people to support and give hope to our members.
Thank you RWoB staff for all that you do, from leading us with care and compassion, to cooking incredible food each and every week for our members. For the support you give each and every woman who walks through our door each week, and for your continued care and support of each of our team, who often face their own traumas and struggles. Throughout it all, you are kind, compassionate, committed and full of hope.

Threads of Hope has been written by one of our team.

The Million Acts of Hope campaign is in part about ‘making invisible kindness visible’. At our welcome centre we are supported by a number of committed and passionate volunteers, including our Trustees.

We celebrate and thank them for their Millions of Acts of Hope (and kindness) that they show to each and every member, volunteer and staff at our Welcome Centre each week.

As part of the national week of action (13–20 May) for the ‘A Million Acts of Hope’ campaign, hundreds of organisations and individuals across the UK are celebrating the millions of acts of hope and kindness that happen all day, every day in our homes and communities. Layla, our CEO explains why RWoB are taking part.

"We are taking part in A Million Acts of Hope because we believe in creating safe, welcoming spaces where refugee and asylum-seeking women can rebuild confidence, form friendships, and feel a sense of belonging.
Each week, our activities turn hope into action: we run English Classes where women practice speaking skills, creative workshops like art and craft sessions that allow self-expression, and wellbeing circles focused on mental health, relaxation, and peer support.

Our social gatherings, such as shared meals, cultural exchange days, and local outings, help reduce isolation and celebrate diversity.
For example, one week might include a confidence-building storytelling workshop, while another features a community cooking session where women share dishes from their home countries.
Through these consistent, supportive activities, we contribute to a collective movement of hope, showing that small, regular acts of care can create lasting positive change."

We are proud to be part of the national campaign ‘A Million Acts of Hope’.

This week is a national week of action (13–20 May) where hundreds across the UK are celebrating the millions of acts of hope (and kindness) that happen each day.

Staff, volunteers and members of RWoB are happy to be part of the campaign ‘A Million Acts of Hope’ and we launch our week of action by sharing our message of hope from our weekly welcome centre. We welcome around 100 women each week from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds, to meet, share food, learn English, make craft and get support as needed.

This week our members came together to create messages of hope to each other and to communities here and around the world.

Thanks to Kerry McCarthy (MP) for her visit to our Welcome Centre today.

Supporting mental health is so important to Refugee Women of Bristol, which is why we are recognising Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 (11-17th May).

The care of our members, volunteers and team are core to everything we do... from the big actions right down to the small ones. A smile. A cup of tea. A kind gesture.

We also know how important it is for us to be aware of our own mental health.. and so we are happy to share The Mental Health Foundations tips to help "lift your mood and improve your ability to cope with life".

Sometimes small steps really can make a difference.
