Statement from Cllr Abdul Malik on the Situation in Azad Jammu & Kashmir
I have been contacted by a number of residents across Bristol who have family, friends and loved ones in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and are deeply concerned by reports of communications disruptions, arrests, restrictions on protest and escalating tensions in the region.
Bristol is home to a large Kashmiri community, many of whom maintain close family ties with relatives in Azad Kashmir. For these families, events thousands of miles away are not distant news stories; they have a direct impact on their daily lives, causing significant anxiety and uncertainty when contact with loved ones becomes difficult.
I support the right of people to peacefully express their concerns and believe that dialogue, restraint and meaningful engagement are always preferable to confrontation. Access to communication, freedom of expression and the ability of families to remain in contact during periods of tension are important principles that help maintain public confidence and social stability.
I welcome efforts by parliamentarians to seek clarification from the UK Government regarding the situation and encourage continued diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing tensions, restoring confidence and supporting a peaceful resolution to the current difficulties.
My thoughts are with all those affected and with Bristol residents who are worried about the safety and wellbeing of their relatives. I will continue to listen to constituents’ concerns and support any constructive efforts that promote peace, stability and dialogue.
