Yes, in the grand scheme of things orange juice is not that big a deal BUT I wanted to focus in on some everyday items that could be avoided or consumed differently in our quest to minimise our carbon footprint.

Here in the UK we rely on oranges to be imported, a lot of the time from Spain. Spain has suffered huge dry spells in the last few years, yet oranges still seem to be low in price and abundant on the supermarket shelves. Sometimes just sitting there rotting.

The distribution of foods around the world is a massive concern. People don’t seem to think about where their food is coming from, how it is manufactured or the impact it has getting from “field to fork”.

Orange juice is marketed as a “healthy” drink. In reality, the processed, pasteurised, packaged orange juice is far from healthy for humans or the planet.

So what can we do to make this a little better for both body and the environment?

🧡 Don’t opt for orange juice thinking it’s a “healthy” alternative. It isn’t one of your 5 a day unless it is a fresh orange!
🧡 Squeeze your own orange juice! It’s so easy just using a lemon juicer and tastes so delicious straight from the fruit.
🧡 Compost your pulp and orange skin so less waste is produced.
🧡 Buy oranges loose, reducing plastic waste from the nets, cartons containing juice or plastic bottles containing juice. The freshly squeezed variety will contain so much more vitamin C and antioxidants than processed OJ.

We have been inactive on here for a bit due to some other major life commitments.
So keen to reconnect with our Climate Change Learning community and start relearning about how we can help spread the word in taking care of our planet together 💚

• What do you think children need to know?

• How do you think we can get the message across?

• How do we connect with today’s adults who need to teach them about this?

• How do we connect and help adults learn too?

We welcome your comments and thought below 👇

This month Climeworks are partnering with Mammut and encouraging people to run/walk 100km over the month of May

They say, if collectively we run 10,000,000km over the months then Climeworks will remove 10 tonnes of Co2 from the air.

Earlier this year, the IPCC released a report stating that there is more than a 50% chance that global temperature rise will reach or surpass 1.5 degrees by 2040.

“We need rapid climate change action on all fronts”.

The power of individuals to mitigate their personal impact on the planet is huge. Governments and businesses also need to step up.

Many people are still so unaware or ‘blind’ to the issue of climate change. Education has to be one of the best ways for and bringing more awareness into the media of the issues people around the work face because of climate change.

This refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. Ditch the fast fashion industry, buy less and shop for quality over quantity. Buy second hand where you can and educate yourself and those around you about sustainable clothing.

What we are eating is massively driving climate change. If we carry on the way we are, we will not be able to feed the amount of people on Earth by 2050. It is hugely important to eat significantly less meat and dairy. It is not only better for the planet, it can be thoroughly better for health.

The most important thing we can do in the fight against plastic pollution is to significantly reduce our reliance on it. While recycling plastic is important, it is no where near enough. When buying plastic or something that contains it - ask yourself ‘Do I need it?’ ‘Can I use something else?’

As Earth Day approaches, it serves as a little reminder to take stock of our personal environmental footprint. It is all to easy to get caught up in the daily ‘convenience’ of life - popping to the shop in the car, buying things in plastic from supermarket shelves, turning the heating on and up because it’s cold outside. Our lives are busy and we often don’t have time to think about how we are going to reduce our personal impact on the planet. So, April 22nd, 2023 can be a great starting or regrouping point.

Earthday.org have developed a Climate and Environmental Literacy campaign with the aim of ensuring students around the globe can experience high quality climate and environmental education, to help build a green economy for all and protect our future.

We can start by signing and sharing this open letter to help establish climate and environmental education for all 🙏

There are an estimated 2.3 billion children in the world and this number is ever growing. This makes children the biggest group of people to be effected by climate change.
Children are also more vulnerable than adults to its harmful effects.

Climate change puts their basic rights at risk, affecting their health, food, water, clean air, education and protection.

What changes do you think you can make to help protect our children’s future?

Some simple ideas
💚 Use less energy in the home - heat, light and water.
💚 Switch to low energy light bulbs
💚 Turn appliances off at the mains
💚 Turn your heating down by one or two degrees.

Brutal heatwaves are gripping countries round the world and the searing heat is part of a global pattern of rising temperatures.

Wildfires are destroying homes, livelihoods, ecosystems, communities and releasing large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

🌳Most forests are carbon sinks, meaning they take up more carbon than they release. Plants store carbon in their leaves, roots and biomass. In forests, over time, this leads to large carbon stocks being stored in vegetation and soils.

When carbon is released into the atmosphere due to fires, it reduces carbon stocks that have built up there over time. Wildfires can also reduce a forests capacity to pull carbon out of the atmosphere, inhibit forest re growth and change the species composition of the forest.

💚 Reducing our personal carbon footprint is one of the most empowering things we can do in the fight a gain at climate change.
💚 Reduce your electricity and heat consumption but turning devices off when not it use, lights off when you leave a room and do not leave devices on stand by.
💚 Turn your heating down a couple of degrees in the winter.

✈️ The UK contributes to the highest number of international air travellers.

🛩 Better planes could make flying 30 - 40% more efficient.

✈️ Developing synthetic fuel from hydrogen and captured CO2 could be a solution.

🛩 Even if we create a carbon neutral fuel, aviation will still have a major effect on the climate.

💚 Solutions 💚

💚 Fly less or not at all.
💚 Put pressure on airlines and governments to come up with an alternative to fossil fuels more rapidly than they are currently doing.

💚 If you have to fly, look into carbon offsetting programs that capture carbon from the atmosphere

💚 Spread the word, help others to become aware of how damaging flying could be to the future of humanity

A growing demand for farmed fish and omega 3 supplements, along with animal agriculture is diminishing krill pollution.

Krill are essential feed for penguins, seals and whales and have the potential to help capture carbon, in fact they capture millions of tonnes of it a year.

So what, as individuals, can we do to help support krill life in our oceans.

💚spread the word. Inform people of how vital krill are.
💚 Look to get your essential Omega 3 intake from plant based sources - flaxseed, algal oil, walnuts and hempseeds
💚 Reduce your meat and dairy consumption
