At the heart and centre of all our work, volunteers provide an incredible range of community based HIV support that is unmatched anywhere and is proudly award winning!
Since opening our doors seventeen years ago, over 100,000 hours of volunteering has been undertaken to provide this unique support to the community. Volunteers work in frontline roles to directly support community, ensuring no one needs to feel alone or isolated, providing safe community spaces & peer support, helping people cope with challenging life circumstances, often helping people in crisis. Over 100 people are part of Lunch Positive every week, a tremendous achievement. The range of support provided by Lunch Positive has grown and developed over the years, all because of the commitment of people that care deeply and put this into practice to support others. They are a brilliant team of people, powering all that we do, making a real difference to peopleβs lives.
Here, Peter β a peer support volunteer shares his own words
"Lunch positive has given me with so much more than just lunches. It has kickstarted my connection to the wider community and helped to unlock a version of myself that understands the value of connection not only to others, but equally as importantly, to myself.
Having moved to the South Coast from London in my mid 50βs and newly single, the thought of seeking out and making friends was pretty scary. As is the thought of moving into my retirement and beyond, trying to manage my HIV alongside the inevitable medical, and social, challenges associated with old age.
Volunteering with Lunch Positive has provided me with a solution to both dilemmas. Itβs given me an opportunity to make new friends in my locality. We share advice and information about living with HIV, and we support each other through the challenges we face as we grow older with our diagnosis.
The specialist support on offer also helps us navigate the increasingly complicated world of staying well at times of difficult circumstances.
Most importantly, the peer support we share makes us feel not so alone and isolated in our HIV diagnosis and has spurred us on to become involved in other community-based activities. Itβs funny, as I got older, I thought my world would become smaller and smaller. Lunch Positive has shown me that the opposite is possible - my world is in fact becoming bigger and bigger. I am very grateful it is there for my community. "
