Lunch Positive was introduced to me by my HIV nurse when I told her how my divorce was destroying my life. I was stressed, tired, alone β€” broken. I didn’t know who my friends were anymore, and I felt like my negativity would push everyone away. I didn’t want to be a burden or be patronised, and I couldn’t let anyone see me cry. Why hadn’t anyone checked in on me? Was everyone his friend now? I knew I needed to change but had no idea how.
She suggested volunteering for Lunch Positive, a community charity supporting people like me living with HIV in Brighton. I filled in the form on the website, and they called to invite me along. When I arrived, my heart was pounding. I was terrified of seeing people who didn’t know my HIV status and overwhelmed by a room full of strangers. But a volunteer greeted me with a calm smile, guided me to a cup of tea, and introduced me to people I felt myself slowly exhale.
Before I knew it, we were talking about food, community and life experience. I’d never spoken openly about isolation and stigma with someone who truly understood what my last 21 years have been like. I was nervous, but I had to ask if I could contribute β€” β€œI can cook!”
Four months in, I’ve gone from nervous energy to confidently contributing, connecting and finding a new purpose. The optimism and kindness here are infectious. I only wish I’d found Lunch Positive sooner. Now, every week, I look forward to lunch β€” and feel proud, and feel I belong here"

This Volunteers' Week, these are the words of one of our recently joined volunteers James. Thank you James for sharing with such openness and authenticity.
Our charity is founded and delivered on the contributions of volunteers, and voluntering is definitely a two way street. The enthusiasm and invaluable lived experiences people bring as volunteers are massively beneficial to our service members and the wider volunteer team, and we're proud and moved that involvement in volunteering gives people such wonderful connection and fulfillment.
We love our volunteer team πŸ’• Thank you to each and every one πŸ’•πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

At the heart and centre of all our work, volunteers provide an incredible range of community based HIV support that is unmatched anywhere and is proudly award winning!
Since opening our doors seventeen years ago, over 100,000 hours of volunteering has been undertaken to provide this unique support to the community. Volunteers work in frontline roles to directly support community, ensuring no one needs to feel alone or isolated, providing safe community spaces & peer support, helping people cope with challenging life circumstances, often helping people in crisis. Over 100 people are part of Lunch Positive every week, a tremendous achievement. The range of support provided by Lunch Positive has grown and developed over the years, all because of the commitment of people that care deeply and put this into practice to support others. They are a brilliant team of people, powering all that we do, making a real difference to people’s lives.
Here, Peter – a peer support volunteer shares his own words
"Lunch positive has given me with so much more than just lunches. It has kickstarted my connection to the wider community and helped to unlock a version of myself that understands the value of connection not only to others, but equally as importantly, to myself.
Having moved to the South Coast from London in my mid 50’s and newly single, the thought of seeking out and making friends was pretty scary. As is the thought of moving into my retirement and beyond, trying to manage my HIV alongside the inevitable medical, and social, challenges associated with old age.

Volunteering with Lunch Positive has provided me with a solution to both dilemmas. It’s given me an opportunity to make new friends in my locality. We share advice and information about living with HIV, and we support each other through the challenges we face as we grow older with our diagnosis.

The specialist support on offer also helps us navigate the increasingly complicated world of staying well at times of difficult circumstances.

Most importantly, the peer support we share makes us feel not so alone and isolated in our HIV diagnosis and has spurred us on to become involved in other community-based activities. It’s funny, as I got older, I thought my world would become smaller and smaller. Lunch Positive has shown me that the opposite is possible - my world is in fact becoming bigger and bigger. I am very grateful it is there for my community. "

Lunch Positive is built upon the amazing contributions of volunteers - their dedication, hard work and skills. Over the last year our outstanding volunteer team has provided over 10,000 hours of frontline support to the HIV community, making a real impact and changing lives. Stephen's words here show the difference our volunteers consistent acts of welcoming, kindness and empathy can make, helping people where they would otherwise not be supported. If you have ever felt totally alone and lonely, you'll know how what a life-changer this support can be. As we start Volunteers' Week and celebrate all that volunteers do and all that they bring. We send our deepest gratitude and respect to everyone who volunteers and makes a positive difference to the lives of others ❀
