🎶 NEW ON THE BLK BRIGHTON BOOK CLUB

We went to African Soul Rebels: Les Amazones d’Afrique, Gasper Nali & Nfamady Kouyaté at the not quite knowing what to expect — and left feeling connected, inspired and dancing all night.

What started as an evening of incredible West African music and talent became something more: a reminder of how powerful it can be to experience cultural spaces with our communities, especially when you’re living away from home.

In our latest Book Club review, we reflect on diaspora, cultural connection, belonging and the healing power of seeing and hearing parts of ourselves represented in spaces here in Brighton.

As we head into Black History Month, we’ll be getting out into the city, experiencing what’s happening and sharing more of the Black cultural events, artists and experiences that are shaping Brighton and beyond.

Afri.Co.Lab x Electric Palace Cinema are thrilled to launch BLACKITY BLACK — a new regular strand of Black Cinema, curated by the local Black community. 🎬

After a pilot year of learning, growing and building, we’re so excited to officially launch with BAFTA-winning director Akinola Davies Jr. in Hastings!

Join local creative and Afri.Co.Lab director Anna Maria Nabirye in conversation with Akinola Davies Jr. and Hastings screenwriter (and legend!) Trix Worrell.

They’ll be talking about Black film, African film, diaspora voices, navigating the industry, and visioning soft Black male fatherhood on screen — followed by a Q&A.

Then at 7.30pm, we’ll screen Akinola’s BAFTA-winning feature debut:

Set in Lagos in 1993, My Father’s Shadow follows two brothers spending a day with their estranged father against the backdrop of political unrest. A vivid, beautifully realised and deeply affecting child’s-eye view of family, memory and a country on the edge of change.

Akinola, who co-wrote the film with his brother Wale Davies, draws partly on his own life to create a hazy, evocative portrait of one unforgettable day in Lagos.

Black History Month Round-Up 🖤

Black History Month is here — and our calendar is ready to help you find ways to learn, celebrate, connect and get involved.

We’ve gathered nearly 100 events and opportunities, and the list is still growing, across Brighton and beyond. From talks and workshops to music, theatre, exhibitions and community gatherings, there are so many ways to engage with Black history, culture and creativity this October.

This year’s UK theme is “Honouring Our Communities” — recognising the people, stories and everyday contributions that shape and sustain Black life. It’s a reminder that community is built through the people who show up, share knowledge, create, organise, care and make space for one another.

That’s what living the Black gaze 365 means to us. Black history and culture aren’t confined to one month. We’re committed to making space for Black stories, connection, creativity and community all year round — while celebrating the energy and work that Black History Month brings into focus.
