📈Gas prices are set to rise again from October. And if households use the same amount of energy as last winter, they’ll actually pay more.

This is despite Ofgem lowering its estimate of how much energy a “typical” household uses.

Some of that reduction reflects welcome improvements in energy efficiency. But for millions of households, it also reflects something much more worrying: people simply cannot afford to use as much energy as they did before.

More than a third of UK households (35%) say they have cut back on energy use because of higher costs. One in ten are now skipping hot meals to save money.

📈Gas prices are set to rise again from October. And if households use the same amount of energy as last winter, they’ll actually pay more.

This is despite Ofgem lowering its estimate of how much energy a "typical" household uses.

Households are bracing for another Ofgem price cap announcement later this month, with energy bills expected to stay sky-high as a result of the Iran conflict, and consumer energy debt mounting.

Yet major energy firms are doing very well out of this crisis. Our analysis has found that the UK profits of a handful of these firms, including Shell and BP, has exceeded £6 billion, while global profits have surpassed £95 billion. That's in this year alone, so far.

The answer is obvious: Use taxes on these windfall profits to support people in energy debt. Help people to make their homes more energy efficient. Transition quicker to homegrown, renewable energy. No more reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.

🗣️ It's bill payers vs. billionaires: while the conflict in Iran has sent our bills skyrocketing due to our reliance on fossil fuels, the energy industry has sat back and watched its profits climb.

Our new analysis shows that firms including Shell, BP and Equinor have made more than £6 billion on their UK operations alone in the first half of 2026. Their bosses have also done well: a handful of the fat cats at the top of these companies have seen their personal stakes rise by a combined £30 million since the war began in February.

People are struggling. And with the next price cap announcement on the horizon, millions more families could soon be unable to cover their energy bills, or be pushed further into energy debt.

🚨 Energy firms including Shell, BP and Centrica have made £6 billion+ on their UK operations alone so far this year, we can reveal today.

A handful of oil and gas companies have made more than £95 billion on their global profits, while the big bosses at BP, Chevron, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell and TotalEnergies have seen their personal stakes rise by £30 million+ since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Price shock profiteers are doing very well out of the Iran conflict. For UK households, the conflict has meant higher bills, difficult decisions and a worsening cost of living crisis.

It's time these windfall profits were used to support those in dire need.

Cutting wildfire risk is absolutely vital, but there was nothing in the Prime Minister’s reactions to yesterday’s COBRA meeting to help the thousands of elderly, disabled and low-income people trapped in homes that can't be kept at a safe temperature.

We need a proper national strategy for extreme heat - especially as climate change makes heatwaves more likely.

Homes upgraded to stay cool in summer and warm in winter, a permanent social tariff for disabled people and those with health conditions and an end to volatile gas prices setting the cost of electricity.

🚨The PM is chairing an emergency Cobra meeting today over extreme heat, wildfires and drought. The Met Office says this could be the UK's hottest summer on record.

Nearly 2,900 people have already died from heat this year in May and June alone, almost double the number for the whole of last summer.

The same homes that are too cold and dangerous in winter are now too hot and dangerous in summer. The Climate Change Committee says 92% of homes could overheat, and the poorest areas are seven times more at risk than the rest.

This is costing the NHS £2.5 billion a year and it's costing lives. We need home upgrades, a proper heat strategy, and a permanent social tariff so nobody has to choose between paying the bills and staying safe.

🗣️Harbour Energy, one of the UK's largest oil and gas producers, has published its results for the first half of 2026.

Harbour Energy's CFO confirmed that revenue was up over 20%, and adjusted profit up 37% to $562m (around £416m)

Shareholders are benefiting directly and Harbour has announced a new £185m share buyback and plans to return at least £593m to investors this year.

For households, the picture looks very different. Gas prices have soared off the back of the conflict in the Middle East leaving millions struggling with their energy bills.

📝New report finds that the NHS pays at least £2.5bn a year treating illness linked to cold, damp homes.

That's the price of a broken energy market exposed to the volatile cost of gas.

The report recommends an expanded Warm Home Discount and social tariff, decarbonisation levies moved off electricity bills, a proper national retrofit programme, grid reform and more loosening of the grip of gas prices on bills.

Fix the market, cut the bills.
