New Music Brighton

New Music Brighton New Music Brighton is an association of composers in the Sussex area, our principal objective being to provide a platform for our own works.

We put on four or five concerts each year in Sussex, including one as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe The typical New Music Brighton programme will consist mainly of first performances of new works although the group has a policy of also including repeat performances and very occasionally including works by other contemporary composers. New Music Brighton has established itself as a significa

nt force in new music in the Sussex area, with close working relationships with a number of other organisations, including Brighton & Hove Music and Performing Arts Service and the Brighton Early Music Festival. We have a management committee consisting of a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary. Communications and publicity are dealt with by a Publicity Officer, Mailing List Secretary and Newsletter Officer. Meetings of the Committee are held four times a year and are open to all members, one of these meetings being the Annual General Meeting. In addition we meet informally from time to time where the topics for discussion are as wide as members want. NMB is a member of the British Academy Regional Network of Composer Associations and a member of Brighton & Hove Arts Council.

Tomorrow Sunday 10 May at 7:30pm the Brighton Italian Festival presents an intimate evening of contemporary jazz led by Italian-born, Brighton-based saxophonist, singer, and composer Betty Accorsi, taking place at the Horatio's Bar, located at the end of Brighton Palace Pier.

Accorsi blends modern jazz, ECM lyricism, and European folk influences into melodic, narrative-driven compositions. Her sound reflects the spacious lyricism of John Surman and Pat Metheny, alongside the drive and harmonic imagination of Wayne Shorter. She will present music from her latest album Nature Prints (2025) — awarded four stars by BBC Music Magazine for its “melodic, painterly sax lines” and “heartfelt singing” — together with selected Italian jazz classics reimagined through the quartet’s contemporary, lyrical sound.

Joining her:
Dan Hewson — Piano
Andy Hamill — Bass
Joe Edwards — Drums
