The term, Steel Magnolias, combines two contrasting symbols: the unshakeable strength of steel and the delicate Southern flower, the magnolia.

Playwright Robert Harling coined the phrase to capture the resilience of the women who display elegant, traditional Southern femininity while possessing incredible emotional strength.

In the play, Steel Magnolias, based on the real-life death of Harling’s sister, we witness this emotional strength being tested to the limit as six friends navigate life, love, marriage, and profound tragedy in a small Louisiana town.

🎭 Cardboard Box Theatre is back for summer term!! 🎭

Come along and join us for Cardboard Box Theatre’s next FREE taster session on 14th April 2026. Each term focuses on building skills in a variety of different theatre crafts.

We run sessions for 6-9 and 10-16 year olds on a Tuesday at the BHOS Community Arts Hub. For more information please email [email protected] - hope to see you there!
