Gam Med A group of UK based medics helping to support and improve healthcare in the Gambia

02/06/2026

Many of the children that arrive in the GamMed clinic have lived for years with severe and life-changing injuries, enduring pain, disability, and challenges that most of us can scarcely imagine. Yet despite everything they have faced, they arrive with remarkable strength, resilience, and hope.

What continues to inspire us most is their determination. Only days after surgery, many are already taking their first steps, pushing through discomfort, embracing rehabilitation, and working tirelessly towards a brighter future. Their bravery is nothing short of incredible.

As the GamMed team, it is an absolute privilege to be part of their journey. To perform surgery that can relieve pain, restore function, and help these children reclaim the opportunities and quality of life they deserve is both humbling and deeply rewarding.

Members of the GamMed team were truly honoured to have attended the Buckingham Palace “The Not Forgotten” Garden Party, hosted by The Princess Royal.

It was a true privilege to be invited to such a special occasion celebrating the incredible work of The Not Forgotten, an organisation dedicated to transforming the lives of veterans and serving military personnel living with injury, illness and isolation — bringing people together, lifting spirits and restoring dignity and confidence.

We were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to discuss our work in The Gambia and raise awareness of the importance of our outreach trips and ongoing support.

A memorable and humbling experience for the team. 🇬🇧✨ TheGambia Outreach Honoured

Although the GamMed team are all now back home and back to their normal day jobs, The Gambia, our patients, and our colleagues are never far from our thoughts. ❤️

As a team, we continue to closely follow our patients’ progress, ensuring they are recovering well following their life-changing surgery. We remain in constant communication with our doctors and nursing colleagues on the ground, offering advice and support whenever needed.

Behind the scenes, preparations for the next stage of our mission are already well underway. We currently have a huge amount of vital medical equipment ready to be shipped out on the next container. Much of this equipment will play a major role in helping to modernise the hospital and improve comfort and care for patients during their stay, alongside the daily essentials needed to keep theatres and wards running effectively.

We are also excited to confirm that our next two outreach trips are now planned, with patients already identified to return for review appointments and, where necessary, further surgery.

The work does not stop when we leave — the commitment to our patients and colleagues continues every single day. 🇬🇲

It’s been two weeks since the GamMed team returned home from their recent outreach trip to The Gambia 🇬🇲

Since arriving back, the team has remained closely connected, continuing to monitor the recovery of our post-operative patients. We are incredibly proud to share that of the 43 patients who received life-changing surgery, only one remains in hospital — and she is progressing well following her complex procedure.

Back home, conversations are still filled with reflections on what was truly an unforgettable experience. New friendships were formed, powerful moments were shared, and the impact of the work continues to resonate with us all.

As the GamMed team continues to grow, we are already looking ahead to our November trip. Preparations are underway to ensure we deliver the very best perioperative care to patients in The Gambia.

Today marked GamMeds’ last full day of operating — and what a day it was.

From start to finish, every theatre was utilised to its fullest, with the team working tirelessly to deliver care as efficiently as possible. Across the hospital, it was incredibly busy: new patients arriving through A&E, while those already on the wards required ongoing surgical input.

There was constant movement behind the scenes, with beds being carefully managed to maintain flow — from recovery through to the surgical wards — ensuring we could continue bringing patients into theatre without delay.

Beyond theatre, the nursing team stepped up once again, supporting the resuscitation department with a critically ill patient. Meanwhile, physiotherapists worked relentlessly to mobilise patients and prepare them for safe, timely discharge — helping free up much-needed bed space.

And 12 hours later… our team is still operating.

An extraordinary effort from an exceptional team…both GamMed and our fabulous local colleagues 🇬🇲🇬🇧

Days 3 & 4 in theatre have been incredibly busy — but every moment has been worth it.
The team have also been hard at work delivering teaching and training to the nursing staff, students and physiotherapists.

Life-changing surgeries have been performed for so many patients, making a real difference where it matters most. From paediatrics to plastic surgery and adult orthopaedics, the procedures have been complex, challenging, and deeply rewarding.

Our surgeons have shown exceptional skill, supported by anaesthetists delivering highly specialised care — from general anaesthesia with nerve blocks to regional techniques with light sedation — ensuring each patient’s safety and comfort throughout.

Meanwhile, our physiotherapists have been hard at work on the wards, helping patients mobilise and prepare for discharge, while our nursing team continues to provide personalised post-operative care, keeping every patient comfortable and pain-free.

This is what teamwork looks like. Every member of the GamMed team, working side by side with our incredible local partners, is dedicated to delivering the best possible perioperative journey for every patient.
