Survivors' Network

Survivors' Network We are the R**e Crisis Centre for Suss*x. We believe that no one should be alone when they have experienced s*xual violence, abuse or harassment.

Survivors' Network is a registered charity and fully accredited member of R**e Crisis England and Wales. Our services include: Helpline & Email service, Independent S*xual Violence Advisor (ISVA) service, Counselling, Children & Young People team (including specialist ISVA, outreach and counselling support), Groupwork, and a range of additional workshops. We also provide expert delivered training

to professionals and our local communities on the prevalence and realities of s*xual violence and its effect on survivors. Our vision is to unite to confront s*xual violence, abuse and harassment so that no one has to face the impacts alone. We are here for you whether your experiences were a week ago or fifty years ago. We will listen to you, believe you and support you. We are delighted to have you as part of our online community. To ensure that we have as safe an online space as possible, we ask that you follow our house rules. https://survivorsnetwork.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/social-house-rules-1.png

In the VAWG sector, we often talk about the links between football and domestic abuse, with research showing that incidents of intimate partner abuse can increase around England matches, whether the team wins or loses. ⚽️

These conversations are vital. But we must not forget another form of harm that is so often intertwined with partner abuse: s*xual abuse within relationships.

S*xual violence does not only happen between strangers. In fact, the Office for National Statistics found that 54% of victims in England and Wales who experienced r**e or assault by pe*******on since the age of 16 were assaulted by a current or former intimate partner.

Behind the statistics on domestic abuse, there are survivors whose experiences include coercion, pressure, control, and s*xual harm, but these experiences are often hidden by stigma, taboo, and harmful myths about relationships and consent.

S*xual abuse is so often holding the hand of partner abuse, yet it can remain in the shadows.

We cannot talk about ending violence against women and girls without framing both s*xual and domestic violence side by side.

Survivors deserve to be believed. Survivors deserve support. 💜

IYKYK...

For many women and girls, these aren’t just everyday items. They’re safety strategies.

We’re taught to modify our behaviour, plan our routes, share our locations, hold our keys a certain way, avoid certain places, avoid certain times, and stay constantly alert. Safety advice is so often directed at potential victims/ survivors rather than those who cause harm.

While practical safety measures can help people feel more confident, we must ask ourselves why so much responsibility continues to fall on women and girls to prevent violence happening to them.

The conversation needs to move beyond "What could she have done differently?" and towards "Why are people choosing to harass, abuse, and perpetrate violence in the first place?"

Real prevention means challenging harmful attitudes, holding perpetrators accountable, teaching consent and respect, and creating communities where s*xual violence is never tolerated.

Because women and girls should be able to carry what they want in their bags, not what they need to survive.

A week ago today was International S*x Workers' Day, and over the past week, we have been contemplating what that means from our perspective as a s*xual violence support service.

We know that many s*x workers are also survivors of s*xual violence, but time and time again, they are silenced, stigmatised, or disbelieved, and too often face closed doors when accessing support.

At Survivors’ Network, we know that being a survivor and a s*x worker are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the criminalisation, stigma and systemic barriers s*x workers face make it harder to access support, justice, and safety.

💜 We believe all survivors deserve to be heard, respected and supported; no matter their job, identity or life circumstances.

Let’s end the judgment. Let’s centre autonomy, consent and compassion.

💜 Happy Volunteers’ Week! 💜

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who help make our work possible.

Our volunteers generously give their time, compassion and expertise to support survivors across Suss*x. From answering calls on our helpline to co-facilitating peer support groups, they play a vital role in ensuring survivors can access understanding, connection and support when they need it most.

Volunteering in this space is not always easy, but our volunteers show up with kindness, empathy and dedication time and time again. Their contribution helps create safer spaces where survivors can feel heard, believed and less alone.

To every one of our volunteers: thank you. Your time, commitment and care make a real difference, and we truly couldn't do this work without you.

Reality TV should never come at the expense of people’s safety and well-being. Broadcasters and production companies have a responsibility and a duty of care to the people who place their trust in them. Participants are not storylines, plot twists, or ratings tools... they are people.

When allegations of abuse, coercive behaviour, or s*xual violence arise, safeguarding cannot become secondary to entertainment value, audience engagement, or profit. Production companies cannot play games with people’s safety in the pursuit of dramatic television.

Creating safer environments means taking concerns seriously, implementing robust protections, listening to participants, and recognising that the impact of harm does not end when filming stops.

We recognise the courage it takes to speak out publicly and stand with survivors who continue to do so.

Looking for connection and support? 💜

Our face-to-face Peer Support Groups are safe, welcoming spaces for adult survivors of s*xual violence, abuse or harassment to come together, support one another and be heard, at your pace and in your own words. These groups are peer-led, trauma-sensitive, and not ther**eutic, meaning there’s no pressure to speak if you don’t want to.

Whether you choose to share, listen, or simply be present, you’ll be in a space held with compassion and understanding by trained facilitators and volunteers.

✨ Groups run in central Brighton at different times
✨ You can attend as often as you like
✨ Confidential, supportive, and survivor-centred

To attend, please fill out a referral. You will shortly be contacted by our Welcome Team, and they’ll guide you through the next steps.

You’re not alone. There’s space for you here. 💛

Story time...Since 2022, we’ve had the pleasure of delivering quarterly S*xual Harassment & the Workplace training for new starters at .media Group as part of their induction process! 💜

Over the past few years, we’ve seen important shifts in conversations around workplace safety and accountability, including changes in legislation through the Worker Protection Act, and it’s been wonderful to work so closely with a company so genuinely committed to learning and creating a positive (and safer) workplace culture.

We really value Haymarket’s ongoing dedication to creating environments where people feel safe, supported, and respected, and we’re so grateful for their kind feedback on our training.

Partnerships like this remind us how important it is to keep having these conversations and embedding them into workplace culture from day one ✨

If you are interested in regular S*xual Harassment training sessions as part of your induction process, or simply hosting a one-off session to comply with the Worker Protection Act, please get in touch to chat with our Training Lead, Helen Race, at [email protected].
