We made this video because the assisted dying Bill returns
to the Commons on 11 September 2026.

Thirty years ago, Mike Oliver warned that disabled people
organising ourselves was a matter of life and death.

He was not being dramatic.

Our organisations have been funded into silence. Grant
conditions replaced campaigning. Service contracts replaced
solidarity. The movement that won independent living was
quietly turned into a delivery arm of the state.

We were disarmed before this fight began.

Baroness Campbell calls assisted su***de and euthanasia
deadly forms of disability discrimination. We are being
asked to trust a system that has spent twenty years telling
us our lives cost too much.

Something we've worked hard on is now published.

Our founder Dr Harvey Cowe has a new peer-reviewed article out in Disability & Society this week.

The argument: the disabled people's movement didn't just decline on its own. Governments learned to speak the language of user-led organisations, then funded them into service delivery and away from campaigning. The movement lost its teeth.

This is not another organisation.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT?

There are already organisations in Brighton & Hove supporting Disabled people and many of them do important work.

But this is not another service.

This is something different.

This is about creating a Disabled People’s Organisation that is:

• Owned by Disabled people
• Shaped by its members
• Independent of funding structures that limit what can be said or done

Every member has a share.
Every member has a vote.

This isn’t about consultation.
It’s about ownership.

It’s not about speaking for Disabled people.
It’s about creating something we control together.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing how this works in practice — including how people can take part, influence decisions, and be part of building something new.
