FOR WHAT ITS WORTH
And that’s a wrap! We have drawn our FWIW auctions to an end, having raised £540 worth of food and essential products. The items we’ve raised have gone to food banks across Brighton and Hove, as well as a portion being donated to Ukraine relief efforts.
We want to say a huge thank you to all the artists who donated works to the auction, and also to those who placed bids and donated money.
This project was a significant part in QUILTs shifting focus, a huge step in our goal to prove how art can create tangible change.
We are taking a bit of time to formulate new projects, but please keep in contact with us about any project or workshop ideas you have!

Another big thank you for your patience during the project- Running through two lockdowns, full time jobs and other projects has been as rewarding as it has challenging.

Lots of love,
QUILT & FWIW

I’m sure many of our followers are aware of the humanitarian crisis currently taking place in Ukraine. It’s not surprising that many of us have felt helpless, wanting to do something but not knowing how, especially when our own circumstances are not necessarily easy. As artists, art being something seen as a luxury not afforded during times of war, we can feel that this crucial part of our identity needs to be put to one side when discussing the harrowing political landscape.

Here at QUILT, one of our aims is to show how art can be used to create tangible social change. Our charity auction .its.worth has been raising food and sanitary products for 18 months, most of these being donated to local food banks and . QUILT has made the decision to donate a portion of the goods from FWIW through to support the incredible relief work currently taking place.

We should not live in a world where we have to choose which humanitarian crisis to relieve, and yet with the corruption that permeates so many facets of society, this is becoming increasingly the case.

QUILT is proud that, even in a very small way, this community has been able to show solidarity through art. You, the members of this community, have contributed to relief of both those locally living in poverty, and refugees suffering the injustices of war.

We have a link in our bio to more information and ways in which you can support the relief work for Ukraine. If you know of any Instagram pages that are supporting this work, please leave a comment with their @. We are particularly focused on how Black and Asian residents of Ukraine have been affected by this conflict, so if you know of any relief funds that pertain to this, leave a comment below.

HOT BOTS ACTIVITY
Many of our lovely QUILT members have expressed interest in our ‘HOT BOTS’ project, and we are excited to release the first stage of the project.
As previously discussed, homelessness in Brighton, and indeed across the UK, is an increasing issue, with many people without homes being subjected to freezing temperatures at this time of year. QUILT feels it’s important to show how art can be used to address such injustices to human rights, even when the powers that be refuse to.
Today, we announce the fundraising stage of our project, which takes the form of a downloadable activity sheet in the shape of a hot water bottle cover, which we encourage all to colour in, design and experiment with! The activity sheet raises funds through voluntary donations, with the guide price of 50p per sheet. This money will go towards funding the project, with the ultimate goal of providing hot water bottles, covers and filling stations to those who need them around Brighton.
If you would like to receive the activity sheet, please email [email protected] with the Subject “HOT BOTS”. We have a supplementary sheet intended to explain the issues behind the project to young ones, and if you would like to receive this mention this in the email. If you would like to donate, please do so via Paypal to the same email address, with the reference “HOT BOTS”. The donations and use of the donations will be detailed in QUILT’s financial transparency sheet, which you can request to see, and which will be released at the end of each quarter.
Download, print if you like, create your design and send it back to us to be featured on our page!

In December , one of our co-founders, was invited by to discuss the question “How can we build a fairer, more equitable, more democratic cultural sector?” Sitting with a panel of fellow creatives and visionaries, Calum prioritised deconstructing this question entirely, highlighting how intimidating the language surrounding the artworld can be. How can we build a fair and democratic Cultural Sector, while using language that alienates the working class and those outside of the artworld, who are already underrepresented within it? Calum also spoke about QUILT’s place within the Cultural Sector, and how we exist outside of Art Institutions, because as fair and equal as an Art Institution may be, they still exist within a capitalist structure, and thus there is only so much that they can do to be equitable. Calum highlighted the need for many artists, such as those running QUILT, to work outside of the Cultural Sector, such as in retail and hospitality, and how this vantage point can actually be a strength.
Lastly, during the Q&A, another of our co-founders asked “Can we build a fairer, equitable, democratic Cultural Sector in an unfair, unequal and undemocratic wider society?” To this, Calum used the example of QUILT, and how we aim not only to create change within the Cultural Sector, but also to use art to create wider social change. Art can be used to build the world we want to be a part of, a fairer, equal, democratic and creative world.

🧦 QUILT DEPOP 🧦
Ever wondered how you can support QUILT’s work, while also getting some trendy clothes?
If you have, then I’ve got wonderful news for you!
QUILT is already full steam ahead working on our projects. This year we will continue to show how Art can be used to create tangible change, through such projects as Hot Bots, For What It’s Worth, and our upcoming Newsletter. To fund these projects, we have made a return to Depop selling clothes, predominantly vintage pieces. QUILT wants to demonstrate a circular economy structure, funding our projects by selling second hand goods, the profits of which will go directly into QUILT’s projects and paying our workers.
QUILT wants to remain politically engaged, addressing inequality issues as we see fit, but this means that we often don’t qualify for Arts Funding, which requires a level of political neutrality that we are not aspiring to. We want to offer our wonderful members a way of supporting our projects, but with an understanding that many don’t have the disposable income to give without anything in return.
The depop will have weekly stock drops, so keep an eye out for some funky pieces!

🌟 PROJECT HOT BOTS 🌟

Recently QUILT has been discussing an issue with one of our community members which many people take for granted- warmth, and many peoples lack of.

In 2018, 78 homeless people died in the UK due to illnesses caused by freezing winter temperatures, this number rising each year despite many cases going unrecorded.*

Lack of access to warmth can, and does, kill. It’s a necessity that can mean the difference between life and death, especially during winter, despite it being a human right.

So, where do we come in as a community?QUILT recently became involved in a strategy to provide hot water bottles, flasks, hats, and more to those who need them in Brighton. Our involvement will extend to craft nights, where all of our community are invited to make hot water bottle covers. We also hope to organise fundraisers to gather the funds necessary to purchase wools, bottles and flasks.

QUILT will host a preliminary meeting to discuss the project in more detail and to create a plan with some guidance from you, our wonderful community members!

With such a great response to our .its.worth auction, we know our community can get involved and help create change.

Before we announce the date and time, we would love to hear of any interest in getting involved, so that we can plan where best to meet. This meeting will be in person, so of course COVID guidelines will be in place, and the meeting will be dependent on further restrictions.

Let us know via DM or in the comments if you’d be up for coming along, and feel free to share the project with friends!

Much love,

🌟 ‘HOW CAN WE BUILD A FAIRER, MORE EQUITABLE, MORE DEMOCRATIC CULTURAL SECTOR?’ 🌟

A reminder that tomorrow our project manager and Co-founder will be partaking in a panel discussion facilitated by UnderExposed] as part of their recent project ‘Critical Pulse’- Co-commissioned by and Sussex festival of ideas.

QUILT’s been on quite a journey since it first started up in 2020, even longer if you remember our group before we rebranded. Calum will chat a little more about our development over this time, our shift in community focus, effective platform utilisation and creative response to local needs as a necessity in the art/cultural sector.

The event is being held at and will start at 6pm. Come along! Tix link in UnderExposed] bio!

Much love,
QUILT team x
