Last weekend, a group of women new to coaching stepped forward to help close one of grassroots football’s most persistent gaps: the lack of women coaching girls’ football teams.

Our Life Goals coaching programme - delivered with the fabulous UEFA/FIFA coach educator Ivi Casagrande - brought them together at The Skep and grounds at Moulsecoomb Place for two days of practical, participatory training. The result: paid qualifications with the FA, ongoing coaching mentoring sessions, paid coaching opportunities with girls youth football teams, coach networking and, most importantly, co-designing the next stage of Life Goals with us.

Turning enthusiasm into pathways, and pathways into some paid opportunities and a community of coaches to help sustain and build on this learning.

None of it happens without Gary, our founder coming up with the idea and Sport England, whose support continues to make this work possible as we plan the next stage.

Are you a woman interested in coaching girls’ football - or maybe it’s something you’ve never considered before?

Either way, we’d love you to join VYD for Life Goals on 15 & 16 August at The Skep, Moulsecoomb Place, Brighton, and learn from Ivi Casagrande one of the best in the game.

These workshops are open to women who are new to coaching, as well as existing grassroots coaches looking to develop their skills through CPD. Men and non-binary coaches are also welcome to join for CPD.

The workshops are free if you’re new to coaching and VYD will pay for your first coaching qualification and provide ongoing opportunities in girls’ football locally.

If you’re already coaching and are able to make a small donation to VYD, it would be greatly appreciated, but it’s completely optional.

Lunch is provided, and the sessions include both classroom and practical-based learning.

Girls’ football in Brighton is booming, but look at the touchline and it’s still mostly men. Gary, VYD’s founder, will tell you straight as he’s one of them, and he wants to help change that.

So we’re launching Life Goals, a coaching pathway built specifically to get more women into girls’ football coaching.

On 15 & 16 August, we’re running two free workshops with Ivi Casagrande, a brilliant coach who works with UEFA & FIFA, has also coached with Brighton & Hove Albion Women and Lewes FC, and has spent 21 years coaching across four countries. No experience needed to join, just curiosity and a willingness to give it a go.

VYD will cover First Aid and Intro to Football qualifications (free, for the first 8 women who sign up), and there are paid coaching opportunities waiting afterwards with the girls teams we are setting up at Crew Club Hawks, our youth football partner in Whitehawk.

If you’ve ever had the thought “maybe I could coach” this is your chance. It’s also open to grassroots coaches of all genders as a CPD event.

In early June, I’m taking on Hadrian’s Wall - walking the full coast-to-coast route in just 3 days.

It’s going to hurt. A lot. But it’s for something that really matters.
