We are taking a short break for the summer holidays.

It was awesome seeing so many Squirrels and their families enjoying kayaking on Kinver Canal thanks to Meg and Bear Creek Adventures.

🐍 Adder Awareness in Warmer Months ☀️
As the weather warms up, we’re more likely to spot Britain’s only venomous snake — the adder.
Bites in dogs are thankfully rare, but cases tend to peak between June and August.
💛 Adders are a protected species and play an important role in our ecosystem. They’re not aggressive and will only bite in self-defence — for example, if they’re stepped on or surprised by a curious dog.
By staying alert and respecting their space, we can help protect both our pets and our native wildlife.
📍 Adders are commonly found in:
🌳 Woodland edges
🌱 Grassy heaths and moorland
🏖 Sandy coastal areas and rocky paths
👉 Keeping your dog under close control (or on a lead) and sticking to clear paths can greatly reduce the risk of an encounter.

Here he is, with his little Squirrel brother, James, officially opening the new veterinary hospital on Chartwell Park.

It's hot hot hot!

With the heatwave and the summer holidays around the corner, now is a good time to remind the children- and ourselves- of the dangers of water.

Dave from West Mercia Search & Rescue visited the hut last week to share his experience and help the Squirrels to understand what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.

Yesterday I asked them what they could remember. These are the key points they took from the session:

🌊 Stay Away From the Edge (safe)
⚽👟 🍼 Throwing a ball, a shoe or a water bottle can help to keep someone afloat if there are no life ropes/rings
❌ NEVER enter the water to rescue someone else
⭐ If you fall in the water, float on your back like a star
📱 999 !

What have we been up to this half term? We've been working through many aspects of the Canal & River Trust Explorers Challenge Badge.

We have talked about why canals were built, designed Castles and Roses with citizens at Oldbury Grange Nursing Home, made bird feeders and bug hotels, learned more about water safety from Dave at West Mercia Search & Rescue, and visited The Lock Inn and Old Smithy Tea Rooms for ice creams. There we went for a little walk down the canal to check off our "Canal side Bingo" sheets and to feed the water birds with healthy treats of sweetcorn, oats, rice and chopped greens. Sensibly, the birds were hiding from the heat, but we hope that other wildlife enjoyed the snack🦆

We only have one more session before we break up for the summer holidays, but we are excited to see those who will be joining us for kayaking at Kinver during the summer holidays. 🛶

Thank you to all the organisations that have been involved and given the children a chance to engage with the wider community, and more importantly learn the importance of being safe around water.

Finally, thank you to Squirrel families for your help on the parent rota. They're a great bunch of children- we are very proud of them 🐿️ ⚜️

🎨🐾DESIGN AN ANIMAL COMPETITION 🐾🎨​

Severn Edge Vets (Bridgnorth) are opening their brand-new hospital at Chartwell Park Business Park on Saturday 11th July at 11am. We are inviting Squirrels, Beavers, and Cubs from 8th Bridgnorth Scout Group to help celebrate!​

​Create your very own imaginary animal and tell us:​

​👉What it is called​
👉Where it lives​
👉Why it has been designed that way (for example, thick fur to keep warm in the Arctic)​

​Your entry can be hand-drawn or created digitally. We are looking for creativity, originality, and effort.​

​🏆 The winning entry will be invited to the official opening of the new hospital and will have the honour of cutting the ribbon! There will also be prizes for runners-up.​

📅 Entries must be submitted by 7:00pm on Wednesday 1 July.​

We can't wait to see your amazing animal creations!

A lovely afternoon at Oldbury Grange Nursing Home. The sun came out for us! ☀️

The children helped with planters, and residents and Squirrels decorated plates with Roses and Castles as part of the Canal & River Trust challenge badge.

We are so lucky to be part of such a wonderful community here in Bridgnorth, and it makes it even more special when our residents can share meaningful moments with local groups. 🥰

Today, we were delighted to welcome The 8th Bridgnorth Squirrels for a fantastic afternoon of planting, crafts, and even a friendly game of bowls! 🌱🎨🎳 There were smiles all around as residents and children spent time together, creating lovely memories and enjoying each other’s company. ❤️

A huge thank you to Faye, the Squirrels leader, all the children, and their parents for joining us. Our residents had an absolutely wonderful time, and we can’t wait to welcome you back again soon! 😊✨
