Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Community Drop-in Session at Sea View Yacht Club to explore how we can protect Priory Bay's important seagrass meadows whilst also supporting boating in the bay ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿšค

If you couldn't make the session you can still share your views via our survey! Survey Open until 13th July: https://forms.office.com/e/21Zv0Ven3v

Did you know that catshark eggcases are also known as 'mermaid's purses'? ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿค”

Spotted catsharks, also known as 'dogfish', 'rough hounds' or 'morgays', are small sharks that are commonly found in shallow waters across the North Atlantic, including the UK.

The 'mermaid's purse' egg cases are a good indicator of what shark species are breeding nearby. The spotted catshark variety is 5-7cm long with curly tendrils at each corner. Look out for them washed up on beaches or, occasionally, deceased adults after heavy storms.

Seagrass meadows are one of the favoured habitats of spotted catsharks, owing to the diversity of prey items and sanctuary that they offer from both predators and humans. Spotted catsharks are commonly caught by bottom trawlers, so increased legal protections of existing seagrass meadows will allow these incredible miniature sharks to survive into the future.

Thank you to our Fragment Walk volunteers!

As summer approaches, our Fragment Walks for the 2025/26 season have come to an end ๐ŸŒฑ

Fragment Walks are a community focused restoration initiative delivered by Project Seagrass on the Isle of Wight as part of the Solent Seascape Project.

Since the initiative began three years ago, an amazing 311 volunteers have joined the Project Seagrass team, collecting 1,104 fragments over 16 fragment walks!

624 of these seagrass fragments have been replanted at our Community Garden in Priory Bay, covering an area of 27 m2. The remaining fragments have been replanted at the Project Seagrass Nursery in South West Wales where they will soon be used to support the teamโ€™s wider restoration work in the Solent.

Central to the success of the Fragment Walks is the commitment and enthusiasm from our volunteers - we couldn't do it without you!

It's Volunteers' Week and we're excited to share an upcoming opportunity to volunteer with us!

This July, the Project Seagrass team will be holding our summer seagrass seed collection in Ryde, Isle of Wight! ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ When: 18th & 19th July
๐Ÿ“Where: Ryde Pier, Isle of Wight
๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Free to attend but sign up required: https://ow.ly/rqFP50YXyjo

This July, seagrass seeds will be maturing along the coast โ€” and weโ€™d love your help collecting them! These seeds will play a vital role in restoring local seagrass meadows in 2027, supporting important marine life and healthy coastlines for years to come.

With opportunities to snorkel or wade we hope you can join us! ๐ŸŒฑ

Seagrass meadows are far more than underwater plants โ€” they are essential habitats that support marine biodiversity, sustain fisheries, and underpin coastal livelihoods across Tanzania.

While it is often assumed that greater seagrass diversity leads to healthier fish communities, research suggests physical structure of seagrass habitats matters most. Taller, denser, and more structurally complex meadows supported greater fish abundance and shaped fish community composition.

These habitats provide critical shelter, feeding areas, and protection from predators, particularly for species important to small-scale fisheries.

As coastal ecosystems face increasing environmental pressure, protecting and restoring seagrass meadows is essential โ€” not only for marine life, but for food security, fisheries, and the communities that depend on them.

Did you know that even crocodiles utilise seagrass meadows? ๐Ÿค”

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is one of the most widespread crocodilians that have been recorded occupying these marine habitats, owing to their tolerance to higher salinity concentrations. Their range is vast, but mainly consists of the coasts of: Florida, Central America and some of South America too.

Very little research is yet to be achieved that has attempted to assess the extent to which American crocodiles depend on seagrass meadows, however the frequent sightings may suggest that the high biodiversity, abundance of prey and plentiful shelter, provided by seagrass, creates favourable conditions for these giant reptiles to thrive.

More generally, crocodilians are just one example that can be used to convey how widely occupied seagrass ecosystems are and the high biodiversity they support.

We're 'shellebrating' World Turtle Day 2026!๐Ÿข๐ŸŒฟ

Studies have shown that species such as green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) are highly reliant on as feeding grounds, with evidence suggesting that these marine reptiles have been using some seagrass meadows for thousands of years. ๐Ÿคฏ

Sea turtles are just one part of much wider and more complex marine ecosystems that require seagrass meadows in order to exist.

Support the Global Seagrass Challenge Fund today and you will be helping to restore and protect these vital marine habitats that support so much life.
